SCRAPER FOR CLEANING IRREGULAR SURFACES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
Application filed. April 9, 1921. Serial No. 460,071.
1 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC A. WATROUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers for Cleaning Irregular Surfaces; and I do declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spring cutters and pertains more especially to cutters employed in cleaning butcher blocks, work benches, and other surfaces of irregular shape, by a scraping action exerted on the surface.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a cutter or scraper which has a compound resilient movement thereby to enable the cutter to more fully conform itself to the irregularities of the surface and to thus seek out the low or concave parts so as to effectually clean or scrape same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cutter wherein a series of individual teeth all lie in the same plane and parallel to the plane of rotation while the length of the teeth determines merely the degree of flexibility which varies inversely to that of the arm which carries the teeth so that the general effect of the series is that of substantial uniformity and flexibility of the teeth.
In the drawings.
Figure 1, is a bottom plan view of the invention;
Fig. 2, is an end elevation;
Fig. 3, is a bottom plan view of a modified form of the invention, and 1 Fig. 4;, is a side elevation of Fig. 3.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention and in the preferred form thereof, an S-shaped spring member 1 is provided formed of relatively thin material, which however may be made as thick as desired according to the degree of resilient action desired. The ends of the two spring arms 2 resultant from this S-formation, are provided with spaced parallel slits 3 of varying lengths so as to form a series of independent or individual teeth 4: of corresponding varying lengths. Each tooth has its outer end part turned at right angles as indicated to form cutting or scraping terminals or edges 5. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the central part of the S-spring member 1, is supported by a hub or head 6 for connection to a rotating shaft or the like leaving the outer portions of the arms free for'unrestricted vertical movements. Thus the armsare each bodily and independently movable vertically and in addition the individual teeth are each independently movable, resulting in a compound spring scraper structure. The teeth terminals 5, of the arms it will also be seen, face in opposite directions.
In modified form of the invention, depicted in Figs. 3 and 1 of the drawings, a head is provided composed of a solid or rigid disk 10, and in lieu of the two-arm and preferably integral construction of Figs. 1 and 2, a structure is provided in which there are, three or more separately formed spring arms 11, each of somewhat curved shape as shown. Each arm is secured by suitable screws 12, to the under face of the disk and is offset at 13 so as to leave free space between the outer or free end portion of the arm and the disk. The outer or free end portion of each arm is provided with a series of spaced and parallel slits 1d of varying lengths thereby to form a series of independent orindividual teeth 15 of corresponding varying lengths. As in the preferred. form of the invention, each tooth has its outer end part turned at right angles to form cutting or scraping terminals 16. In this form of the invention, it will be seen that the arms may bodily move toward and away from the disk and toward same to an extent limited by engagement with the disk. Inaddition, each tooth is movable independent of the others, so that the compound spring action present in the preferred form is also had in the modified form. This compound action enables the teeth to seek.
out the concave or low parts ofthe surface being cleaned to thus more effectively clean the same, and in addition enables the cutter to more readily conform itself to the irregularities otherwise possessed by the surface.
What is claimed is:
1. A rotary disk action cutter comprising preach the center in substantially the same 4. A cutter such as covered by Cluim 3, in.
proportion as the yiclclability of the arm clewhich the slots increase in length toward the creases. center of the cutter to vary the yielding e1 10 3. A cutter suches covered by claim 1, in the teeth proportionately to that of the arms.
which the arms are slotted to form the teeth In testimony whereof I affix my signature and the ends 01 the teeth'are struck down to hereto. 7
form scraping edges. 7 ISAAC A. VVATRUUS.
