, IMPROVEMENT IN SLATE-WASHERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,662, dated May 6, 1873; application filed March 19, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, DANIEL W. LEET and WILLIAM (J. SE'IELns, of Bellaire, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slate-Washers, of which the following is a specification Our invention relates to devices for cleaning or washing slates, blackboards, 850.; and the improvements which we have made therein consists in the combination, in a slate-washer provided with an elastic bottom, of a case -or stand having a contracted neck witha sponge and a cotton or woolen diaphragm seated upon and within the contracted neck, so as to serve the several purposes of a removable partition between the sponge and the waterchambers, to efiect a free conducting communication between them, and to form a seat for the sponge in pressing it into the open end of the case.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents an elevation of a slate-washer embracin g our invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same.

The case or stand A is divided into two chambers, one, a, to receive and hold water, and the other, I), to receive the-sponge B, so that it shall project therefrom and form awashing, cleaning surface. The point between the sponge and water-chambers forms a narrow open neck or contraction, c, the purpose and obj ect of which are to provide an interior shoulder or seat, 6, around the opening for a cotton or woolen diaphragm, f, which spans the open space and covers the water-chamber by sim ply resting upon the sides 6 of the neck. It can be thus adjusted and removed at once, and the sponge is pressed in place upon it.

This diaphragm f, being of fabric, allows the water to pass gradually through it and to be injected through it and into the sponge; and being of one or more thicknesses, retards the passage of the water sufficiently to prevent the sponge from becoming too wet, except when the elastic injecting end (J is manipulated for that purpose.

This diaphragm f is inexpensive, and being removable with the sponge, the water-chamber may be supplied through the spongechamber, and avoid other openings in the stand, if. desired.

An elastic bottom, 0, forms the seat of the case or stand. It may be spun with the stand, or made separate therefrom, to serve as a screw-cap for the'water-chamber.

In using the device, the elastic bottom 0 is manipulated by a gentle pressure to inject the water, and the supply of the sponge is thereby regulated quickly, instead of having to wait for the natural percolation of the water through the sponge.

When the elastic end 0 forms a screw-cap, it is packed by a rubber ring. The spongeholder, however, may be made to screw into the end of the case at the neck 0, instead of the bottom screw-cap, if desired and deemed expedient.

The sponge-holder is open at its outer end, with the face portion forming a gentle curve, and its sides terminating at the neck; it may, however, be of a cylindrical form, like the water-chamber, with a turned-in flange to hold the sponge.

Having described our invention, we claim- 1. In a slate washer or cleaner, the combination, with the cleaning-sponge thereof, of a removable cotton diaphragm, f, seated upon the open neck 0 or" case A, and serving the several purposes herein described.

2. In a slate-washer, the combination, with the stand or case A, of the elastic end (3, the removable diaphragm f, and the contracted seat or neck 0, substantially as herein described.
