LESTER J'. PUTNEY," F LUS ANGELES, CALXFQRNIA I T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lns'rnn J. PUTNEYQ a citizen of the United States, residingat Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new.
and useful Improvements in Envelope, of
whiurh the following is a specification.
lily object is to make a quick openingenvel'o'p; and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed Fignre l is a plan o'f-the envelop paper cutand gummed ready to fold into an en- 35* I 0 my, invention.
velopand showing the quick opening device inaccordance with the principles of Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the envelop folded and sealed ready for use.
' 1 F4: is a front elevation analogous to Fig. 3 and showing the postage stamp ap- I Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the envelop shown'in Fig. 2.
plied.
5, is a view analogous to Fig. 2 and showing a modified construction.
The envelop sheet comprises the solid V body- 1, the side flap 2 extending from one side of the body 1, the side flap 3 extending from the other side of the body 1, the'end flap 4 extending from one end of the body 1. and the end flap 5 extending from the other end,' the flaps to be folded upon the lines 6, 7, 8 and 9. y
In applying my invention to the envelop sheet the cord is placed upon the line 9 and guinmed to hold the cord in place and the tab 11 extends from one end of the cord 10. The tab 11 may be a piece of silk' or paper and the cord 10 may extenda-round the edge of said tab thereby reinforcing the latter and providing a firm and substantial connection between said cord and tab.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ENVELOP.
Patented July 26*,jlQ2L Applicationfiled September 25, 191$. Serial Ito. 326,351.
When the envelop is folded as in Fig. 2, the tab 11 is gummed and stuck-diagonally across the upper right-hand corner of the body 1 in'the proper position to receive the postage stamp, and when thefstamp 12 is applied the extreme end 13 of the tab is left uncovered a-nd'this end 13 is ungummed so as to be free of the body 1.
When it is desired to open the envelop the end 13 is grasped between the thumb and forefinger and pulled to tear the postage stamp and then continued operation causes the cord 10 to tear the envelop sheet on the line 9 thus ell'ectually opening the envelop across the end.
lln the modification shown in Fig. 5 the cord 14 is stuck to the flat 2 just inside of the gum 15 and when the envelop is opened, the envelop sheet is torn along this line thus opening the envelop on the side.
if preferred the cord may be secured to secured and arranged adjacent to the edge of said tab to form a reinforcement therefor, and the body portion of sald cord 00- cupying a position within and being secured to the envelop immediately adjacent to one of the folds thereof.
' In'testimony whereof I have .slgned my name to this specification.
LESTER J. PUTNEY.
