WELL-WASHER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 12, 1921. I
Application led January 29, 1921. Serial No. 404,849.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK E. CRo'r'ro, citizen ofthe United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and bState of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well-Washers, of which the following-is a specification.
This invention has to do with well washers.
The object of the invention is to provide a Washer having a pair of packers' formed of fabric and arranged to be expanded afvainst the casing or screen by the pressure o thecleaning fluidvpriorvto its delivery from the washer pipe. A particular feature involves the expansion ofthe packer sleeve against spring tension and the operation of a valve collar by the sleeve to permit the discharge ofthe cleaning fluid after the sleeve has been expanded.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter'described together with other featuresof the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following speciicationand by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a well screen showing therein in elevation, a washer constructed in accordance with this invention and the packing sleeves not 'expanded,
Fig. 2- is an enlarged sectional detail showing the upper` end of the washer,
Fig. 3 is a detail showing one of the packing sleeves expanded and the valve collar in its open position.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates a section of pipe which is connected in the usual Way to the line of well pipe (not shown) extending down into the well. At the lower end of the pipe 10 a guide plug 11 is inserted. A pair of flanged collars 12 are fastened on the pipe in spaced relation and directed toward each other, the lower collar being immediately above the lu p Ogii the reduced portion of each collar the end of a fabric sleeve 13 is fastened by coils of wire 14 surrounding the same and sol-4 dered together, or any other, suitable fas- -tening may be employed to secure the sleeve. The opposite end of each sleeve is fastened around the enlarged end of a sliding valve has a plurality of perforations 19.
'pipe between the valve collars is collar 15, by means of coils of wire 14 soldered tolgether, or is otherwise suitably fastened. 4 ach sleeve has a diameter considerably larger than the collar portions to which they are attached and are gatliered and plaited at their ends. Water-tightlconnections must be had between the ends of the sleeves and the collars. The sleeves may be made of any suitable fabric such as duck, leather or rubber fabric or any other flexible material. I
l/Vithin each sleeve a coiled sprin 16 sur-v roundsthe pipe l0 between the col ars and is under tension. Each sliding collar 15 has a slot 17 into which a stud 1'8 on the pipe projects. The spring expels the collar 15 so that the stud is in en agement with the inner end of the slot. ach collar 15 The pipe l0 has perforations 20 located within each sleeve and also within each valve co1- lar 15. The springs hold the collars so that their perforations 19 are normally out of registration with the perforations 20. The imperforate.v l
In operation the washer is lowered into the Well screen A and water or other cleaning fiuid is pumped into the pipe 10. The water discharges through the perforations 20 within the sleeves 13, those perforations within the valve collars 15 being closed.
The Water entering the sleeves expands thex same so that they are forced into contact with the wall of the screen as is shown in Fig. 3. When one of the sleeves 13 expands it pulls its collar 15 inward against the tension of its spring 16, so that when the sleeve is fully expanded the perforations 19 will register with the perforations 20; permitting the water to discharge between the sleeves and wash out the screen. The Vslots 17 limit the inward movement of the valve collars. When the pressure of the water is relieved the springs 16 will expand and slide the valve collars outwardly, thus retracting the sleeves and closing the perforations 20 with the collars.
The invention is presented as including all such modifications and alterations as come within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, isz* e 1. In a well washer, a pipe, a flexible sleeve surrounding the pipe and having one end fastened thereto, and a valve slidable on sleeves surrounding the pipe and each hav- 4 the pipe and connected with the sleeve, the ing one end gathered around one of the pipe being perforated Within the sleeve and rigid collars and fastened thereto, perfoalso within the valve, said valve uncovering rated slidingA collars mounted on the pipe, the perforation when slid. the pipe being imperforate between the 2. In a well Washer, a pipe, a flexible sliding collars and perforated within the -sleeve surrounding the pipe and having one sleeves and also within the sliding collars,
end fastened thereto, a valve slidable on and coiled springs within the sleeves surthe pipe and connected with the sleeve, the rounding the pipe between the rigid and pipe being perforated Within the sleeve sliding collars thereof and normally under and also within the valve, said valve 11ntension. In a well washer, a pipe, a pair of coiled spring within the sleeve normally spaced rigid collars on the pipe, flexible holding the Sleeve contracted and the valve sleeves surrounding the pipe and each havcovering the perforation. ing one end gathered around one of the 3. In a well washer, a pipe, a flexible rigid collars and fastened thereto, perfosleeve surrounding the pipe and having one rated sliding collars mounted on the pipe, end fastened thereto, a valve slidable on the the pipe being imperforate between the v pipe and connected with the sleeve, the pipe sliding collars and perforated within the being perforated within the sleeve and also sleeves and also within the sliding collars, Within the valve, said valve uncovering the coiled springs within the sleeves surroundperforation when slid, a coiled spring withing the pipe between the rigid and sliding in the sleeve normally holding the sleeve collars thereof and normally under tension, contracted and the valve covering the perand means for limiting the sliding moveforation, and means for limiting the sliding ment of the Sliding collars. movement of the valve. In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
