UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEATING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1921.
Application filed May 28, 1920. Serial No. 384,982.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL PHILLIPsoN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, Bronx county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new andv useful I mprovements in Heating Apparatus, of wh1ch .the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n heating apparatus and the same has for 1ts object to provide an apparatus by means of which the heat emitted thereby will be successively distributed in a plurality of directions throughout the room in which it is located'.
Further, said invention has for 1ts ob ect to provide an apparatus of this character in which the heat-emitting means may be continuously kept in motion.
Further, said invention has for 1ts ob ect to provide an apparatus of this character having an oscillating member and heat-emitting means carried thereby.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an apparatus of this character comprising air forcing means, and heat-emitting means detachably secured thereto.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construct-ion, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully descrlbed and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts,
Figure 1 is an elevational view of one form of heating apparatus constructed ac cording to and embodying the invention; parts being broken away, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detall sectional view showing the construction-of the heat-emiting means, and the manner in WlllCll the same is detachably secured to its support.
For purposes of illustration, the heating apparatus is shown as comprising heat-emit ting means secured to the fan guard of an oscillating electric fan of an approved type, but it is of course to be un erstood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment thereof which is shown and described.
' Referring to the drawing, there is shown an electric fan comprising a base or support 10 upon the upper end of which is mounted a motor casing 11 adapted to be oscillated by suitable gearing 12, in the well-known manner. Fixed to the shaft of the motor is a fan Wheel 13 inclosed within a fan guard 14: secured to the casing 11 by brackets 15. Extending forwardly through the centrallypositioned ring of the fan guard 14 is a boss 16 having a forwardly-extending threaded portion 17, of reduced diameter, adapted to receive a nut 18, constituting with said boss 16 a clamp for securing a heat reflecting member bolic in form, inposition upon the front of said guard 14.
Removably supported within the boss 16 is an attaching plug comprising inner and outer portions 20, 21, respectively, detachably held in assembled position by bolts 22. Secured to the inner portion 20 of the attaching plug are electric contacts 23, 23, to which conductors 24. 24, are connected.
Detachably supported upon the attaching plug 20, 21, is a heating member comprising a body portion preferably consisting of a plurality of parts 25, 26, and 27, held in assembled relation by a bolt 28 passing centrally therethrough. Wound upon the outer surface of the part 27 of the body portion of the heating member is a coil of high resistance wire 29 having its ends connected to electric contacts 30, 30, secured to the inner end of the body portion and adapted to engage the contacts 23, 23, of the attaching plug 20, 21 whereby the heating memher is detachably held in its operative position with the heating coil 29, properly positioned with respect to the reflector 19.
A guard 31, carried by the reflector 19, serves to protect the heating coil 31 of the heating member from injury and to protect one against contact with said heating element.
In use, as the electric fan is operated, the heat-emitting means, comprising the heating element and the reflector. will be oscillated with the motor casing 11 and cause a. continuous and even distribution of the heat in a plurality of directions throughout the room within which the apparatus is located. The distribution of the heat will be assisted by the air current caused by the fan wheel 13 and as this current engages the rear convex surface of the reflector 19 19, preferably made parait will be clear that the air current will not come into direct contact with the heating coil 29, thus insuring against the undue burning out of said heating coil.
While, for purposes of illustration, the heat-emitting means is shown in connection with an electric fan having a fan Wheel, it will of course be understood that if desired the fan wheel may be dispensed with, in which case the heat-emitting means will be secured directly to the oscillating casing of the motor.
Having thus described my said invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v 1. An apparatus of the character de scribed comprising a support, heat-emitting meansmounted thereon, and means for movin said heat-emitting means relatively to said support, substantially as specified.
2. An apparatus of the character described comprising a support, heat-emitting means mounted thereon, and means for continuously moving said heat-emitting means relatively to said support, substantially as specified.
3. An apparatus of the character described comprising a support, heat-emitting means oscillatingly mounted thereon, and means to oscillate said heat-emitting means, substantially as specified.
4. An apparatus of the character described comprising a support, a casing movably mounted thereon, means ,for moving said casing relatively to said support, and heat-emitting means carried by said casing, substantially as specified.
5. An apparatus of the character described comprising a support, a reflector mounted thereon, a heating element positioned within said reflector, and means to move said reflector and said heating element relatively to said support, substantially as specified.
6. An apparaus of the character described comprising a support, a reflector oscillatingly mounted thereon, a heating element positioned within said reflector, and means to oscillate said reflector and said heating element relatively to said support, substantially as specified.
7. An apparatus of the character described comprising an electric fan having a fan wheel, a heating element carried by said fan in front of said fan wheel, and means for preventing the air current caused by said fan wheel from impinging against said heating element, substantially as specified.
8. An apparatus of the character described comprising an electric fan having a fan wheel, a heating element carried by said fan in front of said fan Wheel, and means for deflecting the air current caused by said fan wheel away from said heating element, substantially as specified.
9. An apparatus of the character. described comprising an electric fan having a fan wheel, a heating element carried by said fan in front of said fan wheel, and deflecting means interposed between said fan wheel and said heating element for deflecting the prgduced air curernt, substantially as speci- 10. An apparatus of the character described comprising an electric fan having a fan wheel, a reflector supported by said fan and positioned in front of said fan wheel, and a heating element mounted within said reflector, substantially as specified.
11. An apparatus of the character described comprising an electric fan having a fan wheel guard, a reflector secured to said guard, and a heating element positioned gitlhin said reflector, substantially as speci- 12. An apparatus of the character described comprising an electric fan having a fan wheel guard, a reflector detachably secured to said guard, and a heating element positioned within said reflector, substantially as specified.
13. An apparatus of the character described comprising an electric fan having a fan wheel guard, a reflector detachably sccured to said guard, and a heating element detachably positioned within said reflector, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, county and State of New York, this thirteenth day of September, one thousand nine hundred and nineteen.
EMIL PHILLIPSON.
