PORTABLE .RAIL-DRILL'.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 7,
Application led April 11, 1918. Serial No. 228,002.
rail drills, and is an improvement upon the rail drill for which Reissue Letters Patent Number'14,196, were granted to me on September 26, 1916.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction and to adapt the rail drill for work upon electric railroads without interruption of the electric current, especially that used for operating signals.
In accordance with the invention and to meet certain conditions, but two drill shafts are employed and these are arranged lin Y alinement and project in opposite directions,
permitting double bonding with only one drill hole in the web of each rail. Improved thrust bearings for each shaft are provided, whereby the thrust block or collar on the shaft is lodged between ball bearings. Furthermore, means are provided whereby the clamp bars for engaging the rails to back up the drills are carried through side bars serving to support them.
In order to prevent short circuiting signal currents when it becomes necessary to repair the tracks, as when replacing rails and subsequently boring them, the two ends of the rail-drilling machine are insulated one from the other so that the current may remain in the track without liability of unintentionally working the signals.
The invention will be best '1 understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modiications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the raildrilling machine mounted on and between the rails of a railway track, said rails being shown in cross section.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1. r
Fig. Bis a left hand end elevation of the structure shown in Fig 1, but confined to the end only of the machine, distant parts being omitted. i
F igl 4 is a longitudinal section of the end of the machine opposite to the showing of Fig. 3 and indicated by the section line 4 4 in Fig. 2.
Fig.- 5 is a plan view of a portion the machine, with some parts in section, and omitting the Vprime mover and adjacent parts.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 66 of Fig. 5. v
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5, but drawn on a larger scale.
Figs. 8, 9 and y10 are sections on the lines Referring to the drawings, there is a main frame composed of side beams 1 and v2, spaced apart crosswise of the machine or lengthwise of the track when the machine is mounted thereon. At suitable intervals there are cross bars 3 connecting the side beams and lalso serving as supports for certain parts of thev mechanism.` rI`he side ybeams are each discontinuous longitudinally and they parts are joined at oneside of the center by coupling plates 4 so that one end 1 -of the frame may be removed from the other end to permit boring of the railsv where the available space'is less than the rwidth between the track rails 5. This feature is fully described in the aforesaid reissue'dLetters Patent. The extremities of the side beams are connected together by end frame members 6, shown best in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. These end frame members have channel extremities 7 with'a portion 8 of each channel lextending lengthwise of the beam 1 or 2 and supported Vjoined by bolts 13 with the beams 1 and 2 electrically vinsulated from the respective construction. The brace18 is joined to the Web 9 by a bolt 19 with interposed insulation 20sothat` there is no .electrical connection between the brace 181 andside beam 1 or 2 as ;the;case may be.`
The posts 17 serve as guidesfor bloclrs21 (Fig. `14)' near opposite `ends of truck beams 22- extendingubeyond the extremities `of the end, frames. 64 ofthe ymain frame and there carrying wheels 23 Yfor running' upon the track rails 5, whereby the track-drilling machine may beitransported fromplace to place. Rising from each truclr beam 22 VnearV one end thereof is an upright 24` With a recess at the upper end `receiving a corresponding endofaa roclrshaft 26 and constituting ajournal .bearing therefor, bolts 27 serving to detachably retain the rock shaft 26 lin its bearings.
Fast on the shaft26` are rock arms 28 "lodged between spaced parts of the upright 24. Each rock arm 231at its outerl end is connected te a link `29 byV anotherl link 30 pivoted upon the end frame 6 near the cor# `responding.end ofthe latter. Each truck beam 22.1isof double construction so that the links 29 and 3() extend between the two meinbei's of each `truclrbeam. Pivoted between these membcrsds a rocklever 31 having one 40s en`d connected'to the link 30 and the other end connected bya similarlinlr 32'to one end of another rock lever 33; The second rock lever 33 is connected by a link 34 to the end `beam 6. The construction is such that when the shaft 26 is rocked inV one direction or the `otheribothend frames 6 are raised or lovvered through the link and lever mechanism.
' V In order to facilitate rocking of the shaft 26 it :carries a .manipulating lever 35 at an vappropriate1` pointirvith a latch member 36 under the control of another manipulating lever37 on the lever` 35: The latch 36 is provided with a nose 38 arranged to engage under acatch 39 to hold the main frame and "parts carried thereby in arr elevated position, `so that they are supported by the Wheels 23 outlof` `Operative relation to the tracks so far Y asidrillingin concerned whereupon the inachine maybe readily moved from' place to place In. iorder to` further brace. the upper endsoftheposts17 themembers 18 close to where connected toitheposts.: 17 are joined together by rodsz401- y Lodgedin each channel end 7 ofeach end .frame6. isla block 411 through which is threaded a set screw 42 designed to be moved toward the: rail 5', so as to determine the approach ofthe corresponding `end of the main frame to the rail 5 for a purpose Which will hereinafter appear.
Extending through each frame 6 near the main beams 1 and 2 are clamp members 43 which may be in the form of bars With downturned ends 44 suitably positioned, when the main frame is resting on the rails, to engage the outer sides of the treads of the rails 5 for a purpose which Will hereinafter appear. The frames 6 have slots 45 therethrough traversed by and guiding4 lthe bars 43. v
Near each end ofthe main frame is a rock shaft 46 mounted in journal bearings y47` insulated from the longitudinal beams 1 and 2 and near each end provided With a rock arm Y 43 to which a corresponding oneof the clamp bars 43is pivoted. Atone end of the shaft 46 there is secured thereto a manipulating lever 49 with thumblatch 50 With which latter there is associated a'racksegment 51 so ythat'the rook shaft 46l may be adjusted to different operative positions.
By this means the clamp bars 43 arebrought into clamping relation with a corresponding rail 5 or moved away therefrom asdesired.
Mountedabout midway of the'length of the main `frameto one side ofthe `division lill@ between the. tivo sections of theV maint frame is a power unit 52 `which may be considered as an internal combustion engine of any suitable type and therefore requires no specific description; i j
The engine 52 is providedWith a main or jjioiveisliaft 53"carrying a pinion. 54 meshing with a gear Wheel 55 on a countcrshaft 56, which latter is journaled in the two members 1 and 2 of the main frame. Extending lengthwise of and journaled in the longitudinal `center line of the main frame are countershafts carrying. terminal bevel gears 57 together `meshing With a bevel` pinion 53. rlhe shafts carryingfthe bevel gears57 each carrying another gear yWheel 59 in turn- -meshing with a pinion 60on a-drillfshaft `61,
there beingtvvo such drill shafts in alineinent one With the; other and extending lengthwise of the main frame.l The `two shafts are driven ink reverse directions by the f bei-'el gears 57 58aiid are` speeded-up by the multiplying gearing 59V and 60. Each `shaft, 61`While constrained to rotate by thepinion 66 is free to move lengthwisethrough the pinion)` Each shaftf is,f1.intlierinore,V supported nearthecorresponding outer end of vthe main frame by a .journal bearing ina `bracket 62'depending from one ofthe cross beams 3 ofthe main frame.` Atitheendof the shaft 61` remote, from the1pinion-60'is. a f
`through the web ofthe adjacent. rail 55 for receiving a double channel pin and rail 10. Each thrust bearing comprises a sleeve 66 held between endv plates 67, 68,by bolts 69. The shaft 61 has fast to it by a pin 70 or otherwise a block 71 capable of rotating within the sleeve, and betweeneach end' of the block 71 and the corresponding plate 67 01'68, are ball bearings 72. This structure permits the shaft even under the thrust of drilling to rotateV with the greatest ease and offer little resistance tok such rotation.
The plate 68 has an arm 73 projecting from oneside thereof, this arm being upright in the installed position and carried by another arm 74 depending from a collar 75 carrying and forming the journal bearing for a shaft 76 having rollers 77 at the ends traveling on the webs 10.
Depending from the main beams 1 and 2 are brackets 78 to which are pivoted the lower ends of upright hand levers 79 having hand latches 80 at their upper ends arranged to move over the opposite edges of a platform 81. The latter is erected on posts 82 which rise from appropriate parts .of the main frame and it overrides the engine 52. The arrangement is such that the levers 79 and the handle 35 are within easy reach of an operator controlling the engine 52. Each lever 79 is connected by a link 83 to a corresponding one of the thrust bearings 65 so that either or both drills 64 may be advanced to the work or withdrawn therefrom at the will of the operator.
The shaft 26 has its electrical continuity broken by insulation 84 and the two ends of the shaft are joined by a sleeve 85, so that the mechanical continuity of the shaft is intact.
In order-to avoid any possibility of stray currents reaching the engine and so causing charges therein to explode out of time., the engine is insulated, as shown at 86 from the main frame and also at Athe pinion 5 4 as shown at 54L in Fig. 1.
The operation of the present machine is similar to that of the patented vmachine and therefore requires. no rparticular description. The height of the drills Awith'respect to the rails may be determined by the adjusting screws 42, limiting the drop of the main frame toward the rails. The feed of each drill with respect to the rails is controlled by the respective lever 79 through the thrust bearing 65 which is supported by the side beams 1 and 2 and travels on the webs 10 thereof through the rollers 77, the friction of the thrust being reduced in both directions of movement by the ball bearings 72 at opposite ends of the block or collar 71.
' Liability of the machine bridging the rails when the rails are charged for signal-purposes is overcome by insulating the two ends of the drilling machinefrom each other and any liability-of stray currents affecting the prime mover is avoided by insulating the vlatter from its'supports on the main frame.
By causing the clamp bars 43 to traverse the end bars 6 thesebars 43 are supported and considerablev mechanism employed'in the structure ofv thel patented machine is avoided. I
