Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
An'olication filed May 17, 1920. Serial No. 381,803.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA ASHWORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the town of Salamanca, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Dyeing Tops, Yarn, etc., of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to the holding of tops or yarn in such density and under proper control to permit the passage of dyeing or mordanting liquids or gases back and forth through said tops or yarn to attain more perfect and permanent coloring of the same; and to this end, the improvement con sists in providing a reel or spool made up of telescopin parts having registering slots therein, t rough which the dye can flow back and forth freely when expelled or withdrawn under force through a perforated pipe or nozzle upon which a plurality of said reels or spools are placed loaded with the tops or yarn wound thereon, a weight being provided to close the top opening and press said to or yarn downward in said spools, the col apsible nature of the reels or spools permitting such downward movement to thereby attain the requisite uniform density for said yarn or tops so that the liquid dye or gases cannot seek and find a line of least resistance and flow in channels or passages, but must force out evenly through the entire mass, thereby attainlng a more perfect action of said dyeing or mordanting liquid or gases, means being provided for withdrawing said liquids from the dyeing vat through said tops or yarn; and the invention consists inthe novel features and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the im roved reel or spool, showing in dotted outline the collapsible feature of the same; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 isa lengthwise sectional view of one ortion of said reel at line 3-3 in Fig. 2. ig. A is a crosswise sectional view ofthe part1 collapsed reel showing the inner and outer engthwise registering slots in the telescoping parts. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the dyeing vat with the perforate pipes or nozzles therein and the filled reelS 5'5;
or spools on said pipes or nozzles, four of {the spools showing? a weight on their upper {end for compressing the same, the other three showing the upper ends of the spools, and said weights and spools showing the central openlng with sald pipe or nozzle there1n. Fig. 6 .is a perspective View of said welght. Fig. 7 is an end elevation of a loaded spool showing the tops wound thereon beyond the flanged ends of said reel or spool. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of one of sald nozzles or pipes for forcing the dyeing or mordanting iquid into and through the tops or yarn, a portion being broken away; and Fig. 9 is a lengthwise sectional view of. one of said perforated nozzles and a plurality of the filled and compressed reels or spools thereon with the weight on the top of the same, said weight closing the top of said reels or spools and forcing said liquid to register with one another by means of a rivet or pin 15 which is attached on the inner end of the inner telescoping part, as shown in Fig. 1 in part 11, the pin 15 extending out through a slot in the part 12 so that said part 11 and said pin 15 are free to move backward and forward in the part 12 and the slot14 holding said parts in the adjusted position. It would not depart from my invention to place two pins, one on-each side, though this has not been found necessary. The slots 14, however, must register one with another so that when the parts 11 and 12 are slipped endwise, the dye can flow freely out through said slots into the tops or yarn 'wound thereon. The pin 15 also prevents the two parts separating from one another under the lengthwise pressure of said tops or yarn.
The flanges 13 are preferably made in the angular form as shown in cross section, thereby greatly strengthening and giving added rigidity to thereels 0r spools was well as providing flanged ends. necessarythat said flanges 13 extend-out as far as the tops or yarn 16 is wound upon said reels or spools, since it is only desirable to hold the tops or yarn thereon through the central portion of the loaded reel or spool, the outer or peripheral portion being free to It is not permit the flow of the dyeing or mordanting liquid or gases back and forth therethrough.
The numeral 17 designates a perforate tube or nozzle, a plurality of which are preferably mounted in the dyeing vat 18. The perforate tube or nozzle 17 is connected by a pipe 19 to a source of supply for the dyeing or mordanting liquids or gases, means being provided at said source of supply for forcing said liquid or gases out through the perforations 20 in said nozzles or pipes 17 under such force as to cause said liquids or gases to flow out through the slots 14 into the tops or yarn 16 and out through said tops or yarn into the dyeing vat 18, means being also provided at said source of supply for withdrawing said liquid or gases from said dyeing vat 18 through the tops or yarn 16, slotted reels 10 and nozzles or pipes 17, thereby forcing the permeation of said tops or yarn with said liquids or gases to thereby evenly color or fix the color within said tops or yarn.
In order to give a uniform density to said tops or yarn 16, a weight 21 is provided which fits over the upper end of the nozzle or perforate pipe 17. The weight 21 is sufiicient to press the tops or yarn 16 downward, collapsing the reels 10 upon which said tops or yarn is wound Any desired size and heft can be given said weight 21 to be placed upon said tops or yarn which is required to give the required density and will detain the dyeing or mordanting liquid in said tops or yarn. Ofttimes the operator in loading the dyeing vat with filled reels will stand on the weight 21 to bring the reels and tops or yarn down to said required uniform density said weight 21 being sufficient to hold the mass when compressed. The dye or mordanting liquid is then forced out through the nozzles or pipes 17 and perforations 20 through the slots 14 and the tops or yarn 16, and after a sufficient period has passed for the dye to thoroughly impregnate said tops or yarn, the operation is reversed and the dye or mordanting liquid is withdrawn from the vat 18 as hereinbefore stated. This process may be repeated as many times as may be required to attain the density of color desired.
The uniform density of the tops or yarn attained under compression in this rocess of dyeing also achieves an additional utility besides that of even dyeing, in that it is non-felting since there is no frictional flow of the dyeing liquid over or through the mass of tops or yarn, but rather a more gradual permeation of said mass by said liquid as it is forced out in all directions from the nozzle 17.
I claim as new:
1. A yarn reel or spool comprising telescoping flanged parts having registering slots therein to permit the flow of the dye through the same, and means to hold said slots in register in different positions of said telescoping parts.
2. A collapsible reel or spool comprising cylindrical portions slidably fitting one within the other and having lengthwise slots therein, and a pin on the inner portion engaging in one of said slots in the outer portion to unite said portions and hold said slots in register.
3. A collapsible yarn reel or spool comprising sheet metal cylindrical portions having flanged outer ends, the inner ends of said cylindrical portions slidably fitting'one within the other and having lengthwise slots therein, and a pin on the inner cylindrical portion engaging in one of said slots in the outer portion to hold said slots in register in all position of said portions.
4. The means for dyeing tops and yarn which consists of telescoping cylindrical top or yarn reels having registering slots therein which permit the flow of the dye through the same and the tops or yarn wound thereon, means to compress said reels and the tops or yarn thereon to a uniform density, and means to close the upper end of said cylinders to force the dyeing liquid back and forth through said registering slots and said tops and yarnon said reels.
5. The means for dyeing tops and yarn comprising telescoping cylindrical flanged parts having registering slots therein to permit the flow of the dye through the same, means to hold said slots in register in different positions of said telescoping parts in combination with a perforate nozzle adapted to receive a plurality of loaded telescoping reels thereon; and a weight insertible on the upper end of said nozzle to compress said loaded reels. 8
6. The means for dyeing which comprise a plurality of loaded telescoping cylindrical flanged parts having registering slots therein to permit the flow of the dye through ASA ASHWORTH.
