INVENIUR.
4M. Pnoro-umnmAPn/c m Mm'assuma's mum-g) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES MGMULLEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FABRICS FOR DRESS-PROTECIO RS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,311, dated April 1, 1873; application filed February 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JAMES MGMULLEN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-Protectors and I do hereby declare the followingito be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to the production of a new article of manufacture to be used as a protector for the bottoms of dresses, as will'be more fully described hereafter.
Figure 1 shows a section of a skirt having my protector applied to its lower edge. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. of the same.
Itake scraps of leather, ground up and mixed with Manila, jiite, or hemp fiber, and reduced to a pulp, and made inthe form of paper. One
side is then japanned and the article softened to a proper consistency by treatingit with glycerine and water, after which it is subjected to a bath of benzine and parafiine, so as. to make it water-proof. It is then passed through suitable machinery for embossing, cutting in suitable widths, turning the edges, and binding the same, when it is ready for use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a waterproof fabric composed of leather scrap and Manila or other vegetable fiber japanned and rendered impervious, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of February, 1873.
. JAMES MoMULLEN. Witnesses: DUDLEYBET S, JOSEPH G. BARNEY.
