To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that 1, Louis C. SNYDER a citizen of the United States, residing at Napoleon, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful 1mprovements in. Jar-l-landling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a device primarily designed for handling hot fruit jars or the like, and embodies means for filling holding and carrying the jar, in addition to means for tightening the lid or cover thereon.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the fol lowing detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction. comaination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

The device forming the subject matter of my invention comprises a frame indicated generally at A. which includes a base 10 upon which the jar 11 is adapted to be supported. The frame also includes an inverted substantially lJ-shaped member 12, the limbs of which have their terminals received by the apertured lugs 13 which project from diametrically opposite points on the base 1 The parts are secured together in any suitable manner. A sleeve 15 embraces one of the limbs of the U-shaped member at an appropriate distance above the base 10, the sleeve being fixed upon the said limb and forming a support for the holder. The jar holder comprises jaws 16 which, at their point of juncture, define a loop 1'? which encircles the sleeve 15 to which it is secured. The jaws 16 are curved to conform to the shape of thejar, and terminate to provide spaced handles 18 which project beyond the other limb of the U-shaped member to be conveniently grasped in holding the jar fixed upon the base. 7 arried by each jaw 16 is a plate 19 which is also curved to conform to the curvature of the jar, the plates 19 pro viding maximum bearing surfaces to permit of an effective purchase being obtained upon the jar by the holder.
Slidably mounted upon the limbs of the U-shaped member are'sleeves 20 each carrying a hollow tubular extension 21. These extensions project toward each other within the frame, and constitute bearings for the pivots 22 which project from diametrically opposite points of a funnel support 23. The funnel support is in the nature of an annulus or ring and adapted to receive. the funnel 2 1 in the manner shown in Fig. 1. Carried by each of the sleeves 20 is a lug 25 adapted to be engaged by a freely pivoted latch hook 26, one of these hooks being carried by each oflthe limbs of the U-shaped member and disposed in the path of the lugs 25 when the sleeves 20' are moved upwardly upon the frame. The hooks 26 automatically engage the lugs 25 and serve to hold the funnel support 23 elevated an appreciable distance above the jar 11.
A lid tightening element is associated with the annulus 23, being suspended from the latter as shown in Fig. 1. This lid tighten ing element is in the nature of a clamp in cluding a split band 28, the ends of which are extended to provide spaced handles 29. Supported upon the upper edge of the band 28 and arranged at diametrically opposite points are hangers 30, in the nature of angular shaped brackets which overlie the upper surface of the annulus 23. Each hanger has associated therewith a pin 31 which enters one of a number of grooves 82 in the top surface of the annulus 23. In this manner the lid tightening element can be turned in either direction for a short distance, with a view of tightening or loosening the lid of the jar as will be readily understood.
In practice, the jar is mounted upon the base 10, the books 26 holding the annulus and its associated parts in elevated position. Subsequent to the placing of the jar between the jaws 16 of the holder, permitting the jar to rest upon the base 10 the annulus 23 is released from the hooks 26 and lowered upon the frame A with the funnel 2a in position to enter After the jar has been filled, the annulus 23 is elevated a slight distance to permit the lid or cover of the jar to be placed in position thereon' The annulus is again lowered and the ban-c128 of the, tightening. element arranged to embrace the lid. frame with the jar supported upon the base can be conveniently carried bymeans of the holder 16, or by carrying the frame from the top of the U-shaped member. By reason of the construction shown and described it is apparent that I have provided a device by means of which hot fruit jars or like receptacles may be conveniently handled.
Nhile it is'believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention Will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that what is shown is merely illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention'to which I do not limit myself, and that such changes may be resorted to when desred as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
