Specification of Letters Patent.
MAILING-FRAME.
Patented July 20, 1920.
Y Application filed May 2, 1919. Serial No. 294,318.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FLORANCE CoLGA'rn GREBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Mailing- Frame, of which the following isa specification. I
The object of my invention has been to provide a frame for pictures which will not to be described. Fastening flaps 14 and 15 are formed on or attached to the side edges of the cover for the purpose of securing the parts in position for mailing. These flaps 14 and 15 are fastened together in any desired manner; for instance, the corners 15" ofthe flap 15 may enter slots '14 in the opposite flap.
In the use of the mailing frame, the picture is inserted between the frame 10 and only serve as a frame, but also as a con-the frameback 11 so. as to be exposed in venient package in which to mail the picture, and to such ends my invention consists in the mailing frame hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a View of a blank suitable for making one embodiment of my invention;
Fig.2 is a View of the blank in F ig; 1 having the frame portion assembled;
Fig. 3 is a View of the package ready for mailing; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the package in position for use as a standing frame.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View from the rear of the package in position for use as a standing frame.
While I have illustrated my invention by the best embodiment thereof known to me, my invention is capable of embodiment in various forms, and it is notto be limited to the particular embodiment shown.
More fully stated, the purpose of my invention has been to provide a package in which a picture could be safely mailed, as, for instance, a photographic portrait, and which should also be capable of serving as an attractive self-supporting frame after the package has passed through the mail.
Referring to the drawings, the blank of Fig. 1 consists of a frame. 10 which is secured to a frame back 11, as by being formed integrally therewith at the bottom of the frame, and by having flaps 10 and 10 formed on the sides of the frame and secured to the back. The frame is secured to a cover 12, as by having the top of the frame-back formed integrally with one end of said cover, and the cover preferably has a flap 13 formed on the opposite end thereof, which is later to serve as a base, the flap 13 having an edge or flange 13 which is adapted to be secured to the frame as later the opening of the frame 10, and if desired, a protectin stiffening or cardboard may be placed in the frame-back of the picture or laid upon the frame so as to protect the frame from injury when mailing. The package is placed in mailing condition by folding the frame 10 upon the cover 12; folding the flaps 14 and 15 upon the back of the flap 12 and securing the said flaps 14 and 15 together and then folding the flap 13 upon the backs of tlie flaps 14 and 15. A fastening, such as a button or a pronged paper fastener 16, having a cord attached, may be provided so that the package can be tied together. The exposed face of the frame-back is adapted to receive the address and postage stamps. When the package has reached its destination, it can be used as a self-supporting frame by unfastening and unfolding the flaps 14 and 15, the flap 13, and the cover 12, and then, as shown in Fig. 4, folding the flaps 14 and 15 against the opposite side of the cover 12 and securing them together by tucking the corners 15" into the slots 14, laying the flap'13 down as a base, and engaging the flange 13 with the bottom of the picture frame so as to secure the frame to the base, thus maintaining the picture frame in an erect position. The flange 13 may either stand bent up in front of the frame or it may be secured to the back of the frame, as by? pasting or by slipping it, or a portion of it, into a slot formed in or on the frame, or behind a tongue 17 formed on the back of the frame. as shown in the drawings.
I claim:
1. A mailing frame consisting of a frame and a cover hinged together, flaps secured to the sides of one of said parts to inclose the other of said parts when said parts are folded together, a flap secured to the end of one of said first-mentioned parts which is opposite to said hinge, said last-mentioned flap being adapted to serve as a base, andmeans for securing the free edge of" said frame to the corresponding edge of said base. i
2. A mailing frame consisting of a frame and a cover hinged together, flaps secured to the sides of one of said parts to inclose the other of said parts when said parts are folded together, a flap secured to the end of one of said first-mentioned parts which is opposite to said "hinge,- said last-mentioned flap'being adapted to serve as a base, and means for securing the free edgeof said frame to the corresponding edge of said base, said means-consisting of a flange formed on one ofsaid parts.
3.- A mailing frame consisting of a frame and a cover hinged together, flaps secured to the sides of one-of said parts to inclose the other of said parts when said parts are folded'together, a flap secured 'to the end of oneof said first-mentioned parts which is opposite to said hinge, said last-mentioned flap being adapted to serve as a base, and means for securing the free edge of said frame tothe corresponding edge of said base, said means consisting of a flang'e anda cover hinged together, flaps secured'to thesides of one of said parts to inclose the other of said parts when said parts are foldedtogether, a flap secured tothe end of one of said first-mentioned parts which is opposite to said hinge, said last-mentioned flap being adapted to serve as a base, and a tongue formed on the back of said frame for engagement with said flange. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this th day of April, 1919. r 1
