DIE AND SPIRAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1920.
Application filed November 2, 1918. Serial at. 260,808. 0
machine for forming clay tower spirals, and I has for its object a die which is arranged adjustably and in the same is rotatably mounted a spiral which forms the inner wall of the cylinder of clay which is passed through the die under pressure.
This invention is used in conjunction with a machine which is the invention of Benjamin Mifflin Hood, who has made application for patent on the mechanical construction and operation of the machine to which my improved die and spiral is connected, and which die and spiral is illustrated on the drawings of the application of Benjamin Mifllin Hood, but only to illustrate the operation.
As stated in the application for patent of Benjamin Miiilin Hood he does not describe nor claim the die and spiral, as this is'my portion of the invention and that Hood and myself are associated together in the manufacture and handling the clay tower product.
The essential feature of part of my invention is to construct a die which is attached to the front end of the clay handling machine,-this die being arranged to support cylinders of various diameters and lengths and can be properly adjusted to center the same in relation with opening of the die frame. And in this cylinder is retatably mounted a spiral which forms an in tegral spiral wall or partition on the inner surface of a cylinder of clay and the rotation of the spiral is set "at such speed to properly form the spiral partition during the outward movement of the body of clay through the cylinder without fracturing or breaking the partition.
Figure l, is a front elevation of my improved die,
Fig. 2, is a central horlzontal sectional View of the same.
Fig, 3, is a vertical sectional on the 1ine,3-3 of Fig. 1.
view taken Fig. {1, is a side v ew of the spiral made use of.
Fig. 8, is a central sectional view of the a same.
Referring to the drawings in detail 9 in dicates a die frame which is supported to the front end of a clay handling machine. Th s frame terminates into an extension 10 which is provided, with a flange or wall 11. By this wall a circular recess or depression 12 is formed and in which is located the adjustable die plate 13. This plate has a central opening 14, which is of a size to accommodate the insertion of a cylinder 15, which cylinder acts as the former for the outer portion or wall of the product. The inner surface of this may be either straight or corrugated as that shown on the product and indicated by the numeral 16. The under surface of the die plate is provided with a cylinder recess 17 which is arranged to receive the flange or shoulder 18 formed on the base of the cylinder 15. This holds the cylinder in position between the die plate and the base of the die frame. The die plate together with the cylinder located therein isproperly centered in relation with the opening 19 of the die frame by means of a plurality of adjusting set screws 20, located at equal intervals apart and the plate 13 is locked within the frame and held from being pushed outwardly by the clay pressure as it passes through the cylinder by a plurality of clamps 21, contacting with the outer face of the plate and held firmly against the outer face of the die frame by cap screws 22. A clear illustration of this structure is shown in Fig. 1. u
The spiral which operates in conjunction with the die and which forms the spiral inner wall ofthe product consists of a head 23 shaped in spiral form and is provided with aninternally screw-threaded bore 24: to which the same is firmly attached to the stud 25, whichstud in turn is attached to the inner hollow shaft 26 which operates in the outer hollow shaft 27. The shaft mechanism bein the invention of my associate Benjamin infirm Hood.
The spiral is so situated and located in the die so that its surface 28 is in alinement with the base or surface -29 of the die frame and the same is of such diamdter as to allow a space 30 between the outer periphery-of the spiral and the inner surface of the cylinder, which is of such thickness to form the wall 31of the finished product; and the spiral formation of the head during its rotation in the cylinder as the clay is being pressed forwardly forms the inner spiral partition 32 of the finished product.
The conical shaped recesses 33, formed in the die frame and which terminates into the cylinder at the front end is, supplied with the plastic clay. by means of the conveyers 34.- These conveyers have a tendency to press the clay forwardly at a certain speed and as the clay is being forced into the cylinder, the spiral which'is rotated causes the clay to pass out in the form of a cylinder with an internal spiral partition, and is in the form as that shown in Figs. 7 and 8.
In Fig. 3, I show the die with the clay formation as it passes through and in contact with the spiral. by the numeral 35.
This device when operated in conjunction with the machine mechanism passes the con- Veyer shaft and the shaft operating the spiral at different speeds so as to operate in conjunction with the movement of the clay under pressure,
Having fully described my invention what I claim is:
1. A die and spiral used for making clay tower spirals, a die frame, a flange extension formed on one end thereof, comprising an adjustable .die plate seated therein, a die located in said die plate, aspiral rotatably mounted in the die which is rotated through the clay and passed through ,the die under pressure, and during the rotation forming a cylinder of clay provided with a spiral inner partition, substantially as specified.
2. A device .of the character described comprising a die frame having an aperture,
This clay I indicate cylinder supported by the die plate in proper relation .with the aperture, a spiral head rotatably mounted in the cylinder, the same when rotating through clay passing it through the die under pressure forms a hollow cylinder with an integral spiral wall,
substantially as specified.
3. A device of the character described comprising a die frame having a flange extension, die plates mounted in the flanged extension, means for centering the die plate on the frame in proper relation with the openings formed therein, means for locking the plate in adjusted position, a cylinder supported by the die plate through which plastic clay is to be passed under pressure, and a spiral head rotatably mounted within the cylinder for forming the clay into a cylinder with a continuous spiral partition pin the inner surface, substantially as speci- 4. A device of the character described comprising a die frame attached to the forward end of a clay handling machine, adjustable die plates carried by the die frame, screws for centering the plates" in,
proper relation with the opening inthe die frame, a cylinder supported by the die plate, locking plates carried by the die frame and contacting with the die plates for supporting the same and holding the plates in rigid position, a spiral head located in-the cylin'- ders and rotated at a speed different from the speed of the moving clay by which a continuous spiral is formed on the inner surface of a clay cylinder passing'through the die, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.-
JOHN WALTER THOMAS. Witnesses W. A. AL XANDER, C. C. LOVELADY.
