SURGICAL APPLIANCE FOR- WOMEN.
i Specification of-Letters Patent. Patented J an. 13, 1920.
Application filed September 13, 1919. Serial-No. 323,455
To aZZ whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, J osnrn a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surgical -Appliances for Women, of which-the-following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is' the provision of simple, eflicient and easily applied means for preventing bed wetting by women and girls afliicted with bladder weakness or any other disease that prevents them from controlling the discharge of urine.
To the attainment of the for'egoinggthe inventionconsists in the peculiar and advantageous appliance hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying -drawings, 'hereby made a part hereof:
Figu'i'e 1 is a general view j showing the device constituting the preferred specific embodiment of my invention combined with the straps which are preferably, though not necessarily, employed in the attachment of Fi 2 is a longitudinal section through the c amping device per 86.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same. Fig.- 4 is an enlarged deta1l section illustrativ'e of the" means for strongly though yieldingly pressing" the labia-engaging portions'of the clamp jaws toward each other.
' Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of 1 the drawings.
ner as to compress and thereby effectually close the eduction orifice portion of the urethra, thereby preventing bed wetting.
' As illustrated the device comprises two "jawsl. These laws are preferably, though not necessarily, of celluloid for the sake of combined li htness and strength, and each is I provided w1th an intermediate portion 2 that is longitudinally concavo-convex, the convex side being outermost. On the inner sides of their forward portions the jaws are provided with serrations 3 or are otherwise roughened to better enable them to engage and retain their hold. on the labia mentioned.
Bein of celluloid the jaws 1 are resilient,
and t eir rear side by sideportions are c011 J. MARTINKA,
' My..1i.ove1 device is in the nature of clamp, and is designed to be applied in and to engage the labia of the vulva in such man ent, is:
' hold the I forward portions thereo nected' together through the medium of' rivets 4.. At a point slightly in advance of the said rivet connection the jaws are connected togetlw rby' one or two elastic bands 5 which are arranged inapertures of and extend between thejaws andhave the effect of normally'though yieldingly holding the jaw portions .3 together with a view to bands 5, the placing of the said jaws with th'e'labia mentioned between them, the ini tial retention of the jaws on the portions of thesaid "labia at the opposite sides of the eduction orifice of the urethra by the said elastic bands 5 and the subsequent compression of the labia and theeduction portion of the urethra between-the jaws in a powerful'manner by turning the nut up on the bolt or otherwise subjecting the jaws to pressure.
The attaching straps 9., 10 and 11 are preferably applied to the clamp device in the manner shown. Said straps are also, by
preference, elastic in character to conduce to the comfort of the patient, and are equipped with appurtenances 12, 13 and-14 or fastener mem ers of any other approved type so that the device may be readily and securely fastened to the body of the patient.
ilt will be apparentfrom the, foregoing that notwithstanding the facility with which my novel device maybe applied, the
device may be depended upon to prevent bed wetting by a woman or a female child.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1. A device forpreventing bed wetting by a woman or female child, comprising aws formed of thinlresilient material and having concave-convex intermediate portions, flat opposed rear portions connected together and forward portions the inner or opposed faces of which are roughened, an elastic band arranged inand connecting said rear portions of the jawsand tending to fyieldingly together,
desire to secure by LettersPatand means connecting the intermediate portions of the jaws and adjustable t0 positively press said jaws together.
2. A device for preventing bed Wetting 5 by a woman or female child, comprising resilient jaws of plate-like form, means connecting the rear portiqns of said jaws to-' gether in opposed relation, resilient. means for holding the forward portions of the jaws under yielding pressure against labia, I and means connecting the jaws and adjust able to subject the same to giositive pressure.
