SIDNEY W. PAINE, OF EDSON, ALBERTA, CANADA;
CHAIR.
Application filed June 19, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY W. PAINE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Edson, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a. specification.
In public places of assembly provided with rows of chairs, considerable annoyance, inconvenience and discomfort is experienced by persons by late arrivals or others passing in andout, this being due chiefly to the limited space existing between the rows of chairs. It frequently happens that the person seated is required to rise in order to permit another to pass in or out and as a result the person thus disturbed is not the only one annoyed and inconvenienced, because those in the rear have their vision obstructed and as a result are greatly annoyed.
The present invention provides a seat which obviates the necessity for a person occupying the same to rise in order to permit another to pass in front, either in going to or from a seat in a row. In accordance with the invention the seat is slidably mounted upon the stand or support in. such a manner that the occupant may move backward or provide ample passage room in front and may again return to normal position after the person has passed in or out.
The drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings hereto attached,
Figure 1 is a side view of a chair embodying the invention, the full lines showing the normal position of the chair and the dotted lines indicating the body of the chair moved rearward and the seat thrown upward.
Fig. 2 is a front view.
Fig. 3 is a rear view, the upper portion of the back being broken away and the seat structure being in section.
Fig. 4 is a detail view in elevation, a portion of the seat being a longitudinal section.
Fig. 5 is a top view of the stand or sup porting structure, the dotted lines indicating the relation of the seat frame.
Corresponding and like parts are referred Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1919.
Serial No. 205,405.
to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The supporting structure of the chair may be of any design and as shown is of the form of a pedestal comprising a base 1 and a standard 2. A head 3 is mounted upon the top of the standard 2 and comprises a lower socket portion and an upper box portion which is open at the top and receives a plurality of rollers at. The rollers 4: have journals at their ends which enter vertical grooves 5 formed in the sides of the upper box portion of the head 3. The head 3 may swivel on the standard 2 so that the body of the chair may be turned.
The body of the chair comprises a seat frame 6, a back 7, arms 8 and a seat 9, the latter being hinged at its rear edge to the frame 6, as indicated at 10, thereby admitting of the seat being thrown upwardly, as
indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The seat frame 6 is oblong and of rectangular formation and is slidably mounted on the head 3 so as to slide backward and forward, as indicated by the dotted and full lines in Fig. 1. A cooperating tongue and groove connection is formed between the sides of the frame 6 and head 3, thereby maintaining the body of the chair in position upon the stand or supporting structure. The seat frame 6 is of box form, being closed at the top and sides, the top resting upon the roll ers 4, whereby the body of the chair may be moved backward and forward with comparative ease. The construction is such as to admit of the parts being readily assembled, the seat frame being placed in position or removed from the head 3 when an end piece is disconnected. The seat frame closes the top of the head 3 and protects the rollers 4.
It will be understood from the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the invention provides a chair which is adapted for use in theaters, concert halls and other places of entertainment and assembly which will permit of a person passing between a row of chairs from or to an aisle without necessitating the occupant or occupants of chairs to rise, since the person seated may provide sufficient passage way by pushing the body of the chair rearward and subsequently drawing the body of the chair forward into normal position.
The foregoing description and the drawing's have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A seat, comprising a supporting structure including a head of rectangular form and open at the top, rollers mounted within the head and a seat frame slidably mounted onthe head and engaging the rollers and having a tongue and groove connection with the head.
2. A seat, comprising a standard, a head mounted on the standard and adapted to turn thereon and including a rectangular box shaped portion, rollers mounted in the head and a seat frame closing the head and slidable thereon and in contact with the rollers and having a tongue and groove connection with the head.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIDNEY W. PAINE.
