I To all whom itmay concern: 1 Be it known that I," STEPHEN SENIW, a
- ';of- I-llinois,.have invented new and useful Improvements in B-ayonets, of which the 1 following is a specification. V This invention relates to bayonets, the object being to provide a bayonet which may 1 not only serve the purpose for which such weapon is intended, but may also be used as a pair of shears for cutting barbed-wire entanglements and the like.
Another object is to provide acombined ,bayon'et and shear, in which the finger loops ,of the shearhandles are foldable out of the way when; not in use, thereby not interferirrg with the use of the bayonet as a' weapon, yet 7 {providing convenient means for manipulating: the shear, if desired. [Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description isread in connection with the ac- 1 .companyir1g drawings. S i Inthe drawings:
Figure 1 is a. view of a combined bayonet I and. shear in position upon the end of a rifle. j-Fig."2 is an enlarged elevation of the in- ;vention detached and showing the manner of use as a shear.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the handle of the combined bayonet and shear showing the manner of housing the finger loops.
, Referring-to the drawingsin detail, wherein'like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the end of the rifle barrel is indicated at 10, the combined bayonet and shear being shown in position thereon and being indicated generally at 11. Any suitable means may be employed for removably securing the bayonet upon the riflebarrel, .the one shown being only one of many which may be employed for the purpose.
The combined bayonet and shear coma pair of blades 12 and 13, which are as shown at 14,
:pivotally secured together, the blade 12 being of greater length than the blade '13, and
greater portion of its flat surface for the adjacent being reduced for the flat face of the Specification of Letters Patent.

blade 13 and a shoulder 15 for contact with the end 16 of the blade 13. The combined thickness of the blade 13 and the reduced portion of the blade 12 is equal to the thickness of the outer end of the last mentioned blade so that when the blades are in closed position they present the appearance of a single blade from the hilt to the point of the weapon. The hilt of the bayonet is formed in two sections 17, one of which is carried by each of the blades 12 and 13 and register when the blades are in closed position. The handle of the bayonet is formed by the projecting ends of the blades 12 and 13, as shown at 18 and 19, and these projections serve as handles for the shear blades 12 and 13. For the convenience of manipulating the handles, the extensions 18 and 19 are provided with loops 20 and 21, which are adapted to receive the fingers and thumb in the manner of an ordinary pair of shears. The loops 20 and 21 are pivotally mounted upon the extensions 18 and 19, as shown at 22, the mounting being such as to permit of the loops being swung inwardly over the inner faces of the projections 18 and'19 and into depressions 23. By this means the loops may be folded inwardly between the extensions 18 and 19, and when so folded the blades may be closed and the bayonet will present the appearance of any ordinary weapon of this character.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such ohan es as properly fall within the scope of t e appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A combined bayonet and shear comprising a pair of pivoted blades, means for removably securing the blades to the end of a rifle to permit of their use as a bayonet, cooperating cutting edges formed on said blades to provide shears and a finger receiving loop carried by and foldable within a socket in each of said blades.
2. A combined bayonet and shear comprising a pair of pivoted blades, means for removably securing the blades to the end of a rifle to permit of their coiiperatingr cuttin blades to provide s ceivingfinger loo prising a pai removably securing the blades r of pivoted blades use as a bayonet, edges formed on said ears and a foldalble refor eaehof. said blades.
