MATTRESS BASIN-DRAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 23, 1916. Serial No. 132,952.
To all whomt may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED. M. BIDWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress Basin- Drains, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for preventing pollution of bedding by incontinent patients, and has for its object the provision of an efficient device for this purpose, which is simple in construction and convenient in use, which iscomfortable for the patient and is readily put in lace and removed, and readily cleaned and sterilized.
- Another object of the invention is the provision of a mattress or mattress section so constructed as to cooperate with and permit the advantageous use of my improved drain apparatus.
With the foregoing and related objects in view in invention consists in the constructions, parts and improvements herein set forth and claimed. Y
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated one embodiment of my-invention. In said drawing, which forms a part of this specification and wherein the same reference numerals designate the same parts throughout, Figure'1 is a top plan view showinga bed mattress in three parts with the center part constructed to receive and equipped with my improved basin drain. Fig. 2 is a transverse cross-sectional view on line 22,F1g. 1.
While basin drains in accordance with my invention may be made use of with any.
mattress, I prefer to make use therewithof a three section mattress such as is ordinarily provided in modern hospitals, the mattress consisting of three separate sections with the divisions therebetween running crosswise of the bed, as shown in Fig. 1. As eertain structural features of the mattress are important, the section containing the basin drain being specially constructed to receive the same, the use of a three part mattress is preferable, since, in order to utilize my invention, it is only necessary to remove the center section and to substitute one of my specially constructed center sections and to provide the accompanying basin and dram.
1O designates the mattress made up of like sections 11 and 12. Ordinarily a third like intermediate section completes the mattress, but when my invention is to be utilized a specially constructed mat-tress section, preferably of the same size as sections 11 and 12, is provided. This mattress drain section 13 is in two arts, a principal part 14: having a preferab y circularly ended slot or recess 15 therein and extending to the side 16 of the bed, and a smaller mattress part 17 fitting in the slot or recess 15 so as to leave the preferably circular opening 18 substantially in the center of the bed and said part 17 extending to the open end of the slot 'or recess 15 so as to fill out the mattress section 13 flush with the side of the bed.
This central opening 18 is left to accommodate the device 19, which I shall refer to as a basin. It is preferably circular in form and has a preferably fiat bottom 20, and on its upper portion 21 comprises a central drain pan 22 and an annular seat 23 for receiving a preferably pneumatic annular pad or ring 24 encircling the pan 22, affording an easy and comfortable support for the patient. The side walls 25 of the basin, with the bottom 20 and top portion 21, preferably form a permanently closed hollow structure which is light and sanitary, as no polluting fluids come into contact with its interior space 26. The bottom 20 of the basin 19 preferably rests on the mattress Patented Mar.4,1919.
support, as the bed springs, and a drain pipe 27 communicates with the drain pan 22, preferably at the central and lower part thereof, as at 28. This drain pipe at its inner end is received within the hollow interior 26 of the basin and extends laterally, projecting from the side wall 25, beneath the mattress section 17, resting on the springs or other mattress support and is directed downwardly at its outer end as by being provided with an elbow 29 preferably having a bore flush with the bore of the pipe 27, the said elbow being preferably screwed on by hand and not screwed up fixedly, so that it may readily be removed so as to facilitate the cleaning of the device.
As all the parts of the basin and drain are of metal, they may be readily cleaned and sterilized, and when the basin is to be removed it can be drawn out onthe side of the bed by first removing the removable mattress section, or the mattress section 17 and basin may be removed together.
The operation and utility of the invenlVhile I have described the preferable embodiment, it will be apparent that changes 1 therein and modifications therefrom maybe resorted to Within the scope of my claims and Without-sacrificing the advantages of my invention.
Having thus claim:
1. A mattress provided with a recess extending to the side thereof, a basin in sai recess and adapted to be supported above the bedspring or other mattress support, a removable mattress section in said recess and extending to the side of the mattress, and a drain also adapted to be supported above the bed spring or other mattress support and extending from said basin beneath the removable mattress section.
described my invention, I
2. A. mattress basindrain comprising a central mattress section for a multiple section mattress, said section having a slot therein extending to the side thereof and a removable mattress part in said slot, a basin in said recess and adapted to be supported above the bed spring or other mattress suport, and a drain pipe for said basin also adapted to be supported above the bed spring or other mattress support and extending out beneath the removable mattress piece. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I hereto set my hand, this 21st day of Novem' ber, 1916.
ALFRED M. BIDWELL'.
