Be it known that I, ELIZABETH F. LA- MoN'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beacon, in the, county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattresses for Invalids, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in mattresses and has particular application to mattresses designed for invalids.

The chief characteristic of this invention is to provide a mattress of this character which is composed of removable sections whereby the sections may be readily removed for the purpose of relieving the invalid of the contact of the mattress in the event that the invalid is affected with bed sores, and thereby permitting the sores to quickly heal. 1

I Referring more particularly to thedrawings', my invention comprises a main body portion 1 which isformed of-any suitable material and which is recessedlongitudinally at the medial portion of the body as at 2. In thisinstance I have shown three sections for occupying the recess 2 but I wish it to be clearly understood that any number may be used without departing fromthe spirit of this invention. The outer ends of the outer sections are adapted to engage the strips 3, the latter serving to prevent longitudinal movement ofthe strips within the recess thereby confining the same the accidental displacement of the sections.

To further insure the sections 4 remaining in their proper position within the-recess 2, I provide, each of the sections and the bottom wall of the recess with separable clasps 5 preferably of the head and socket type, the head portions of which are secured to the bottom Wall of the recess while the sections in active position and at the same time permitting the ready removal of the sections, it being understood that the head and socket portion-s of the clasp may be easily separated.

In connection with the body portion 1 of the mattress I use a head or foot section 6 which .is of a length and thickness as that of the body portion so that the same will lie flush therewith when applied either to .the head or foot of the mattress.

As previously stated the recess 2 extends longitudinally of the body portion 1 and is arranged at the medial portion thereof, and as the invalid generally occupies the center of the mattress, the removal seetions' l will underlie the occupant so that in the event that the occupant is affected with bed sores,

The recess 2 is .supposed to be of such a width as not-to allowthe invalid to fall therein, the opposite side walls of the recess supporting the invalid upon the mattresses will be understood. It will therefore be evident that when the sections are removed, the invalid will still be supported upon the surface of the mattress at the same time relieving the affected parts from the pressure of the mattress. It will thus be seen that I haveprovided simple and eflicient means for, relieving the affected parts of a persons body from the contact of the mattress to permit the healing of the same, and that the in:

valid will be comfortably supported upon the mattress at all times.

It is thought from the foregoing taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, that the construction and operation of this device will be apparent-to those skilled in the art, and that minor changes in size,

shape and proportion and minor details of construction may be made without departing trom the spirit and scope of the appended claim.

What I claim is A mattress including a body portion having an elongated recess therein, removable sections arranged Within said recess and a strip connecting the upper corners of the ends of the recess and cooperating with means in the bottom of the recess for holding said sections in position.
