Patented Feb-1i, rare.
Application filed November 11, lpl. Serial No. 262,068
which, the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to a foldable seat for use in connection with the temporary benches constructed of boards or plank and found generally at chauta'uq uas or similar public places for seating audiences, and has v for its object to provide a combined seat and back having few connecting parts so that manufacture of the device will be practical and economical, will be durable in wear, and
will be convenient in use for removably atit to a bench, and may be readily,
taching limited space for transfolded to occupy a The invention consists of the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanyingdrawmg, wh'erein,--
Figure 1 is a side view of the device. Fig. 2 is a rear view and Fig. 3 is a front view of the same. Fig. d is a view of the device when collapsed or folded. Fig. 5 is a erspective view showingthe, device app ied to a bench.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, the device consists, in part, of rectangular back-frame 7, the lower end of the back-frame being, pivotally connected with the rear part of the seat-frame by or plates 8, the latter preferably being arranged in pairs as shown in the drawing, and mounted upon the side-strips a of t seat and side-strips of the back and held by any suitable means,
the means shown herein for this connection being the pair of cross-strips or rods 0 and shown in Fig. 2, and operating, respectively, and the pair of stripsh, other cross-strips or rods a also being employed.
At 9 and 10 are respectively indicated webs of fabric, canvas or similar flexible material, the web 9 being suitably secured to the strips a of the frame 6, and the web 10 being secured to the strips 5 of the frame 7.
in. Foldable-Seat Attachments a rectangularseat-frame 6 and a to connect the pair of strips a,
As thus described, the rectangular frame 7 may swing to a position substantially parallel with and into engagement with the frame 6, strips) and I; being approximately of ,the .same length. Numerals 11 indicate a pair of curved clamping-members or hooks, each having its shank journaled in a cap or equivalent holder 12, these caps being mounted on the front ends of the strips a to permit a swin 'ngmovement' of the clamps.
A rearwar swinging movement .of the 7 back is limited by means of the pairsof links 12} and 14, these being employed in-pairs and p1votallyconnected at'their nner ends as indica'ted .at 15, the links 13 having a pivotal 1 connection, as indicated at 16, with the strips hot the back, and each link 14 bein provided with 'a slot 17 for receivin a eeper 18, the latter being mounted on t e strips (1.
of the seat.
In operation, the device maybe placed upon the horizontal seat 19 of a bench 20,
the bee 11 engaging the lower side thereof, as shown in Eli, 5, the device providing a comfortable bac -rest 1'for a person using it as a chair, the stresses directed to the back, incident to its use, being adequately sustained by, the arrangement'of the pivotally connected links13 and 14, the pair of'cla'ms Y .11 permitting the occu ant to incline body rearwardly but e 'ectively preventing disengagement of the chair seat from the bench by rearward stresses, and reventing any swinging movement of the evice, the
canvas or web 9 preventing contact of the clothing of the occupant with the seat 19,
the latter often being covered with dust.
The use of the device will be appreciated by all who attend public gatherings where benches are provided for seating an audi ence, for the reasons stated, that thebenches 7). are not provided with backs, and generally are constructed for temporary use only.
It will be noted that, by means of the hooks, the back and seat may be we? in collapsed relation, said hooks, for this pur ose'being swung circ e for engaging t e back, the arts then bein substant ally asshown in ig. d of the e rawing.
is l have described construction in detail, I limiting myself in this respect, and details may be anged as may his: f
do not wish'tobe understood as substantially a half-- are be of advantage, and changes in form, size and proportion of parts may he made within the scope of the invention as claimed.
1. In a foldahle seat attachment for touches, a seat, a back having a mounting on the seat to permit it to be folded thereon and also to have a swinging movement outwardly therefrom, means to limit the out ward swinging movement of the back from the seat, a plurality of hooks carried by "the seat for engaging the bench when the hack has been swung outwardly, each hook-being adapted to have a swinging movement for en aging the back when said-back has been to ded upon the seat.
2. In a folda'ble seat attachment for benches, a seat, a back hingeably connected with the seat to permit it to lie in folded re-- lation therewith and to be swung outwardly therefrom, means to limit the outward swinging movement of the back from the seat, and a hook mounted in the front part of the seat for removably engaging the bench when the back has been swung outwardly from the seat, said hook Boeing-arranged to messes lation with the'seat to maintain the seat andpart of the seat for removably engaging the bench, a rectangular hack mounted upon the rear part of the seat and adapted to' be moved into v en, z;ment with and to he swung outwardly from the front part of the seat, means to limit the swinging movement of the back outwardly from the front part of the seat, each of said hooks being adapted to have aswinging movement when disengaged from the bench to engage the hack when'the latter has been moved mto engagement with the front part of the seat.
In testimony whereof I have afigxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
