Description

P. B. VIELE.
[ Improvement in Folding-Chairs.
N0.128,767, PatentedJuKy 9,1872.
@MWWZL PLATT B. VIELE, or ROCHESTER, new YORK.
IMPRQVEMENT IN FOLDING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,767, dated July 9, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
Be it known that I,PLATT B.V1ELE,- of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Folding-Chairs, of which the following is a specification: 1
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap simple folding-chair with a cane or a board seat, that may be upholstered, if desired; and it consists in hinging the rear of the seat-frame to the back, and coupling the short posts to the long ones by means of straps or links, pivoted to each at such points, with .relation to the points of connection of the seat-frame to the legs as to permit the chair to unfold to the desired position, and to close so compactly that the short legs and seat, both of which are straight or nearly so, shall coincide with the straight portion of the long posts or back. V
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved chair, the dotted lines indicating the relative position of the parts when the chair is folded. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, showing the same when folded. Figs. 3 andet show different modifications of the method of coupling the short legs and the seat to the back.
The frame A and seat S may be of any desired form or style; the short legs a being,
preferably, straight. I use the same kind of axial tie-rod, r, set forth in mypatent of May 7,1872, .but I hang the short postsaupon the outside of the back posts I). By this relative arrangement of the posts I am enabled to widen the front of the seat S, which greatly improves the form and appearance of the chair. The seat-frame or plank S, whichever is used, may be pivot-ed between the back posts b, as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be hinged to them either as shown in Fig. 3 or in Fig. 4. The
hanger or coupling straps s are connected to the short legs a by one end being pivoted upon the rod 1*, and the other end to the back posts b at a point at such a distance from the point of connection of the seat S as will cause the chair to maintain the desired position when in use, and also to permit it to fold closely. This is readily determined by marking the point when the posts are folded up.
It will be seen that an ordinary cane-seat frame may be used in this chair, ora plank seat may be used; and in either case they may be upholstered, if desired.
What I claim as my invention is- The folding-chair having a rigid or stiff seat,
S, and provided with pivoted links or coupling-straps s, for the purpose of connecting the short legs a to the back posts I), combined substantially as shown and'described, and for the purposes set forth.
