Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 26, 1917. Serial No. 193,339.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. EMERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Containers for Grease-Cups, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible containers for lubricating grease and consists of an improved form thereof adapted protectively to inclose a charge of grease and designed particularly to permit of its successful use with standard forms of grease cups.
Attempts have been made to employ lubricating grease put up in collapsible containers in capsule form each containing a proper charge of the lubricant for the grease cup in which it is to be used thereby providing a desirable and convenient means for charging the grease cups without spreading the grease where not desired and avoiding the wastage and soiling of the hands and clothing incident thereto. tempts have been commercially unsuccessful, particularly in connection with the simple ty e of grease cup largely used onautomobil ds consisting of. a fixed base member providing an entry passage for the grease and having threaded thereon a cap or cup member which compresses and feeds the grease as it is threaded down on the base. The reason for this failure resides in the fact that the collapsible containers heretofore used were of such form that in most instances upon compressing the containers to discharge the grease the material of the con tainers is forced outwardly into contact with the internal threads of the cup. As a result it becomes difiicult and sometimes impossible to screw down the cap by hand to feed the grease and moreover, the containers become torn and adhere to the cap to sucha degree that it is only with difficulty that they can be removed.
According to my present invention I provide that the collapsible container, which may be of any suitable material, shall be of an improved form which upon being subjected to pressure to expel the grease will in collapsing fold inwardly so as to avoid extrusion of the folds into contact with the threaded walls of the cap. As a result of forming the container of this improved arrangement the aforesaid objections are overcome and the lubricant may successfully be used in capsule form as the crushed containers fold inwardly and out of contact with thecapso that upon removal ofthe cap the crushed container may be easily expelled.
The described and other features and advantages of my invention will be understood by reference to the drawing herewith wherein there is shown a desirable embodiment of my invention and wherein the reference numerals of this escription are applied to the corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the figures, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating an approved form of container of my invention with the protecting cap thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with the cap removed and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the container in inverted position. Figs. 4 and 5 and (3 illustrate the manner in which the containers fold as the grease is expelled as used in a standard form of grease cup. Fig. l shows the cap in position with a full charge of grease; Fig. 5 is an advance position and in Fig.' 6 the cap is removed, illustrating the fully collapsed capsule. Fig. 7 illustrates my improved type of capsule being used in a modified type of grease cup.
Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings illustrate an approved form of my invention which consists in forming the grease container of suitable collapsible and grease proof paper or other material and of the cup shape as shown; The container 1 is formed to be of cup shape with a closed bottom 2 and has its side wall 3 inclined as shown for the greater part of its length and provided with a marginal top portion l which is straight sided to provide a perfect fit for a one piece removable cap 5 fitted thereon as shown to .to provide a proper charge of lubricant for the grease cup in which they are to be used.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a grease cup comprising a base member having an outlet passage therethrough for the grease, and a cap member threaded thereon and adapted to be screwed down onto the base to expel the grease from within the cup, of a collapsible grease container having a charge of grease therein adapted for use therewith, said container being of cup-shaped form and provided with a closed Wall at one'end and with an opening at its other end arranged to communicate with the outlet passage of the base member and said container having a portion of its side wall inclined to promote folding inwardly thereof when collapsed under pressure in the on 7. In a device of the character described, the ombination of a grease cup comprising a base having a passage for the ease and a second member movable with r tion thereto, of a collapsible grease container having a cup shaped body portion adapted to be interposed between the base and movable member, said container having an opening directed toward the base member and a closed upper end and having its body portion formed to romote folding inwardly of its side wall when subjected to pressure by the movable member, and means on the base member adapted to be engaged by the collapsed capsule to retain the latter thereon.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a grease cup comprising a base member having an outlet passage therethrou h for the grease, and a cap mem ber threaied thereon and adapted to be screwed down onto the base to expel the grease from within the up, of a collapsible I grease container having a charge of ease therein adapted to be received within the cup, said container being of cup shaped form and having an outer closed end and an inner open end communicating with the outlet passage of the base, said container being formed with its outer closed end of smaller diameter than its open end and with its side wall inclined to promote folding inwardly thereof when collapsed under pressure in the cup, and means on the base member adapted to be engaged by the collapsed capsule to retain the latter.
