IMPROVEMENT IN RING TWINE-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,316, dated June 25, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Ring TwineGutter, invented by LEWIS P. LAFFRAY, of Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York.
Figure l is a side view of my improved ring twine-cutter, and showing in dotted lines the knife raised for inserting the twine. Fig. 2 is the same view as Fig. 1, but partly in section, to show the construction.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved ring twine-cutter, designed to be worn on the forefinger of the left hand. It consists in pivoting acurved knife or cutter in a groove of the finger-ring, and providing the same with a spring'and thumb-piece to adapt it to be suitably operated, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a ring, the upper or back part of which, where the signet or stone is usually placed, is made thicker, and has agroove cut into it longitudinally with the band or circle of the ring. B is a crescent-shaped knife, which is placed in the groove of the ring A, where it is secured and pivoted in place by a small screw, 0, so as to be detachable, to enable it to be taken out and sharpened when necessary. Upon the concave or inner side of one arm or part of the knife B is formed a cuttingedge, and upon its other end is formed a thumb-piece, which latter end is held out from the ringAby a small spring, D, attached to it, and which enters and rests in the groove of the ring A.
In using the cutter, which is designed to be worn upon the forefinger of the left hand, the thumb of the left hand is pressed upon the thumb-piece of the knife B, which raises the cutting part of said knife B out of the groove in the ring A. The twine is then passed beneath the cutter, and a slight pull upward and forward cuts it. Thocutter may also be conveniently and advantageously used for cutting the selvage of muslin or other goods to enable them to be readily torn.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The curved or cresent-shaped knife 0, pivoted in the longitudinal groove of the ring A and provided with the thumb-piece E, bearing on the spring D, as shown and described, the cutting end of said knife resting in the groove,
so as to be protected thereby when not in use,
as specified.
LEWIS P. LAFFRAY.
