Description

WILLIAM H. KING.
Holders Improvement in Sash- Patented May 28,1872.
UNITED STATES 'WILLIAM HASKELL KING, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH -HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,248, dated May 28, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improve ments in Sash-Lock, invented by WM. HAS- KELL KING, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-locks or retainers; and. consists of a divided case provided with laterally-projectin g lugs, to which is adapted a sliding bolt, acted upon by a spring and operated by a cam, all as fully hereinafter set forth.
In-the drawing, Figure 1 represents views of the two sections of the casing; Figs. 2 and 3, side and front views of the sliding bolt; Fig. 4, an end view of the casing; Fig. 5, a view of the cams for manipulating the sliding bolt, showing a key by which the cam is operated; Figs. 6 and 7 views of a metallic frame adapted to sash of a window, and in which the bolt is pushed to retain the sash in any position.
A A are the two sections of the metallic casing, each provided with a laterally-projecting lug, a, and having a face-plate, 0. Within the casing is arranged a sliding bolt, B, provided upon each side with recesses e 6, adapted to the lugs a, for the purpose of retaining the bolt in its proper position. This bolt is formed with a shank, b, which extends into the portion d of the casing, and upon this shank is arranged a spring, f, to so act upon the bolt as to at all times have a tendency to throw the same outward, but may be retained back unlocked by forcing the cam 0 back and thereby hold it in that position. Upon the end of this bolt is formed a cam-shaped projection, c,
which is acted upon by a lozel'lge-shaped cam, 0, provided with a head, g, to receive akey or wrench, k, by which to operate the same. This cam O is formed with a small projection, h,
which fits in a slot in one side of the casing A, while the other end extends through the opening K in the casing A, and projects through window-j amb. The casing A A is arranged in a recess in the jamb, with the head.
9 projecting through the same to allow it to be operated by the lozenge-shaped earn 0 and the key k. D represents a metallic frame, which is adapted to the window-sash, and is formed with shoulders Z 1, onto which projects the sliding boltB for the purpose of retaining the sash in any desired position. this metallic frame one of a different character may be used; or the sash may be formed with slots for the reception of the sliding bolt.
WVhen the sash has been raised, or when it is desired to raise the same, the bolt '13 being in one of the slots of the sash, a key orwrench, 7c, is placed upon the head 9 and then. turned, thereby causing the cam O to act on the camshaped projection c and throw the bolt inward or outward, as the case may be.
What I claim as my invention is- The improved sash-holder, consisting of the case A A, cast in two pieces, with interior lugs a, flanged face-plate c, and projections 01,
said bisected case containing a bolt, B, oper-' ated by the lozenge-shaped cam C, the head 9 of which is adapted to be actuated by key k and the spring f, all constructed, arranged, and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
To the above I have signed my-name this 4th day of May, 1872.
W. HASKELL KING.
