ObORLES S GARBAGE-RECEPTACLE.
S peci fieation'of Letters Patent.
Applicationfiled April 16, 1917; Serial Nd. 162,432.
1 '0 all whom it-may concern Be it known that I, EMME'rJ. VARREN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, inthe county ofQWa'yne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Odorless Garbage.
Receptacles; and T do hereby declare the 1 following toloe a full, clear, and exact description. of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertainst'o makeand use the same.
. This-invention relates to improvements in garbage receptacles'a'nd particularly to odorless receptacles. g
' One object of the present invention is to provide a'device' of this" character intowhich the garbage can be readily introduced and which'will at the sam'e'tii'neeflectivelyprevent the escape of odors therefrom.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is of such *censtruction that the entire contents of the receptacle can be quickly and easily 'diimp'ed by-'-the collector without removing the cover.
Another object is to providenovelmeans for closing the garbage receiving opening whi h can be quickly and easily opened and closed. Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection withthe accom-, panying drawing.
In the drawing: 7
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a garbage receptacle made in accordance with my invention.
Fig.- 2 is a 'front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a top planview of the receptacle, the cover being removed.
Fig.4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the 1ine55 of Fig. 1. a
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional viewtaken on the same line as that of Fig. 5,-but showin the sliding plates in opened position.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents a cylindrical receptacle formed from any suitable material,
but preferably galvanized metal. In the upper end of the receptacle there is secured a downwardly and inwardly extending, inverted truncated cone member 11, the lower end of which forms the opening 12, through which the garbage is introduced into the receptacle. Mounted in the receptacle, on a level with the lower end of the cone member,
slide the disk in the tracks.
and at suitable distances at the sides of the opening therein, are two parallel guiding track members 13. Slidable in these track members are the semi-circular disks 14 and 14, the straight sides 15' of which are arranged to abut at a point midway of and below the said opening 12. side of the receptacle, and preferably intermediate the corresponding ends of the tracks, there is disposed a bar 16, said bar being extended through an opening 17 in the side of the receptacle, and having its inner endsecured to the adjacent disk 14. The outer end of the bar is turned upwardly, as shown at 18 to provide a handleby meanso'f-which the bar may be pushed in and pulled out, to To the side of the receptacle, adjacent the before-mentioned end of on of the tracks, isse'cured an eye 19, while to the opposite side of the receptacle, and adjacent the other end-of the other trackthere is secured a similar eye' 20.
To the disk 14 adjacent the first narned'eye 19 there is secured one end of a wire or other suitable cord 21, said cord being engaged through said eye and having its other end when the bar is pulled outwardly the disk 14 will also be pulled in that direction, and from beneath the opening 12, while the cord 22 will pull the disk 14' in the opposite direction, that is away from the disk 14, and from beneath the opening 12. Thus the opening will be uncovered to permit of the ready introduction of garbage into the receptacle. When the bar is pushed in the disk 14 will be pushed in and by reason of the pull of the cord 21 on the disk 14', said disk will be drawn to a point beneath the opening 12 and into abutting relation with the adjacent edge of the disk 14, thereby effectively closing the said opening.
A removable cover 23 is provided for the upper end of the receptacle, as clearly shown Through one 25, said member being provided with a suitable handle by meansof which the same may be quickly and easily slipped in and out of the slot. It will be noticed that the receptacle is without a bottom, except the disk 25, above referred to, whereby when the collector is to dump the receptacle, it is only necessary to lift the receptacle and rest the same on the side of the garbage wagonand then remove the disk 25. The contents of the receptacle will immediately'drop therefrom into the wagon.
Carried by the edge of the disk 25, is a loop or eye 26, which when the disk is in proper position within the receptacle, registers with upper and lower similar eyes 27 carried by the receptacle above and below the slot. A pin 28 is removably disposed in these registering eyes to hold the disk from accidental removal.
The ends of the wires or cords are attached to the disks by means of the hooks 29 carried by said disks, as clearly shown in the draw- What is claimed is: i
1. An odorless garbage container including a receptacle, a frusto-conical wall in the upper end thereof, horizontal supporting trackways mounted below the lower end of the wall, oppositely sliding closure plates mounted in the trackways, eye members car- .in the upper end thereof, horizontal parallel and transversely extending trackways mounted within the receptacle and below the smaller end of the said wall, oppositely movable disks mounted for sliding movement in the trackways, immediately beneath the smaller. end of the frusto-conical wall, eye members secured to the wall of the receptacle adjacent one end of each of the trackways, and at diametrically opposite points with respect to the receptacle, and cords disposed slidably through said eye members, and each cord having one end secured to one end of one of the disks, and
the other end secured to the corresponding end of the other disk.
In testimony whereof, I alfix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
