Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented apr.. 23, 191@ Application filed December 24, 1917. Serial No. 208,645.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES T. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wolcott, in the county of White and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink-Wells, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to ink-wells and particularly relates to ink-wells of a type having a covered top formed with a restricted orifice for the introduction of a pen into the well, which orifice is provided with a yieldable closure.
It is the object of the invention to provide an ink-well having a novel construction of yieldable counter-balanced closure and to arrange said closure in a novel relation to two compartments receiving the ink.

In these views 1 is a receptacle formed with two cylindrical compartments 2, a partition 3 between said compartments being formed with a slot 4 establishin communication between the same, said s ot being extended from the top of the partition downward a considerable distance and having in its walls opposed slots 5 extending a lesser distance downward from the top of the partition. Through the slot 4 is passed the arm 6, the extremities of which extend respectively into said compartments, one of said extremities being formed with a semispherical seat 7 for a ball 8 and the other extremity vbeing weighted as indicated at 9. The pivot for said arm is formed of a pin 10 passing intermediately therethrough and having its extremities journaled in the lower ends of the slots 5. rI`he top of the receptacle l is peripherally formed with a flange ll which is adapted to retain in place a cover 12 having formed therein a Haring orifice 13 which, when the cover is in place, lies centrally over the compartment in which the ball 8 is located. '.lhe weight at one end of the arm 6 subjects the other end thereof to an upwardly acting force whereby the ball normally bears against the cover 12 and projects slightly into the orifice 13, securely closing the same.
When a pen is thrust downward through the orifice 13 the arm 6 is swung on the pivot and the pen-point slips over the surface of the ball 8 and enters the ink. Preferably the semi-spherical seat '7 will be apertured as indicated at 14 so that any ink entering the recess receiving the ball will readily be discharged.
It is to be noted that the above described construction permits a very easy assembly of parts since the arm is established in its pivotal relation merely by registering the ends of the pin 10 with the slots 5 and displacing the arm downwardly until said pin rests at the lower ends of said slots. The ball 8 will preferably have a perfectly smooth surface so that a pen-point will readily slip od' of said surface after the arm has been displaced.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with an ink-well having an orifice in its upper portion to admit a pen, of a ball closure for said orifice, a pivoted arm within the ink-well formed at one extremity with a socket loosely receiving said closure, and means acting on said arm to yieldably hold the closure engaged with said orifice..
2. The combination with an ink-well having an orifice in its upper portion to admit a pen and having a wall formed with a vertical slot, the walls of said slot being formed with opposed vertical slots, an arm extending into the first-mentioned slot and having pivots respectively received by the last-named slots, a closure for said orifice carried by said arm, and means acting on said arm to yieldabl hold the closure engaged with said ori ce.
