Other objects of the invention are to provide a hammock or bed of a type which may be readily transported and which may be erected in an easy and expeditious manner or collapsed and rolled for transportation as desired.

This and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown inthe accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this speclfication, and v in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing a hammock made in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 8 is a view of the hammock rolled for transportation. 4 The hammock consists of a rigid rectangular frame comprised of side elements 10 and ends 11,'upon which rests a mattress 12, having a covering 14, and provided at one end! with a pillow 15 which may be of any desired shape. Formed longitudinally in the side elements 10 are interior slots 16, to which are fitted the tenons 18, of transverse bars 19, to the inner side and-centrally in the r 2 length of which are secured straps 20 bV means of which the mattress is suspended. Formed transversely through the side members 10 ;are a plurality of apertures 22 with which are engageable pins 23, the same passing through openings 24 formed-in the tenons 18, so that the bars 19 may be adjusted longitudinally of the frame.

Supporting means are provided by posts 25 set rigidlyin the ground and which are reinforced by cables 26, secured at one end of the posts and at the other to pins 27 driven into the ground. Attached tov the'top of the posts 25, are other cables 28, which pass through eyes 30, set in the lower side of the frame end elements 11, so that the cables are guided thereby, their ends being engaged with eyes 32, fixed in the transverse bars 19 upon their outer sides. r

In operation, the posts 25 having been rigidly driven into the ground so as to be firmly held therein and the cables 26 arranged so as to reinforce the same, the cables 28 are engaged with the upper end of the post and passed through the eyes 30, below the frame elements 11 and engaged in the eves 32, of the transverse bars 19, which maybe adjusted along the side elementslO, so as to raise or lower the hammock or bed as may be desired.

In the adaptions shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive the hammock or bed is comprised of a mattress like formation comprising front body elements 35, the cushioning material being held in relative position by the tuft buttons 36 as is the filling in pillows 38, the mattress being covered by an impervious blanket 39 which may be engaged with the edges by snap fastener elements 40 attached to the inner side of the blanket, the other elements 41 being on the mattress as is clearly indicated.

Over the illow 38 is a cover 42, preferably of rigid construction, which afi'ords protection from rain or snow or other material dropping from above.

To the ends of the mattress are rods 44, having near their ends, hooks 45, containing rings 46 in whichare secured one end of cables 48, their other convergin ends being secured in ringsor eyes 49 w ich pass over the head 50 of the osts 51 in such manner as to support the ammock and its occupant.

Secured to the sides of the posts 51 by means of bolts 53 are other posts 54, the same being set at an angle, so that in connection with the posts 51 as to form rigid supports for the weight which the hammock is to carry. In order to prevent the several posts from entering into the ground to a greater depth than is desired, Washers 52 are secured to the lower ends of the several posts.

Thus the hammock may be quickly extended ready for use, or rolled compactly as is shown in Fig. 8, in which condition it may be readily transported.

Having thus described my invention What claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2* 1. In a hammock, the combination with a rectangular frame and a mattress supported thereby, of a pair of transverse bars slidably mounted interiorly of said frame, means for engaging said bars in an adjusted position, cables secured to said bars and means for supporting said cables.

2. In a hammock, the combination with s rigid rectangular frame and a covering en gaged therewith, of a pair of supports arranged at the ends of said frame, cables secured to the upper end of said supports,

means for guiding seid cables below the end elements of said frame, it pair of bars mounted parallel to the end members and adapted to move longitudinally within said frame, means for securing said bars in an adjusted position and connections between said bars and said cables whereby said frame may be adjusted.

3. In 3, hammock, the combination with a rigid rectangular frame and a pair of supporting posts erranged'at the ends thereof, of longitudinal slots formed in the inner surfaces of the adjacent side elements of said frame, transverse bars having tenons engageable within said slots, pins passing through said longitudinal frame elements and said tcnons whereby the bars may be engaged therealong, supporting cables secured at one end to said supporting posts and ,at their other ends to said transverse bars, and guides arranged upon the end elements of said frame for said cables.
