CANOE YOKE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
Application filed July 5, 1917. Serial No. 178,644.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY FRANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at State Line, in the county of Vilas and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Canoe Yoke Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel canoe yoke attachment to fasten to the canoe for the purpose of carrying or portaging the canoe; to provide a quick and easy means for balancing the weight of the canoe when the packer places the canoe, upside down, on his shoulders for the purpose of carrying or portaging the canoe; and to provide novel means for quickly adjusting the device to any desired portion of the canoe.
I attain the objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a portion of the canoe, the invention being shown in side elevation applied to the canoe; Fig. 2 is a perspective of plate 2; Fig. 3 is a perspective vlew of my clamp bolt; and Fig. 4 is a detail of the clamp bolt engaged to a portion of late 2.
Like numera s designate like parts in each of the views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide an L-shaped plate which is secured to the lower portion of the gunwale of the canoe as shown in Fig. 1. The downwardlyturned portion of plate 2 is provided with spaced notches 7. I provide a hook 5, the grooved portion 6 of which is adapted to engage in notch 7 of plate 2. A clamp nut 8,
which is provided with a handle 9, is adjustably engaged to the threaded portion 11 of the bolt 5. A suitable washer 10 is interposed between nut 8 and the board or portage bar 4. Hook 5 may be readily released from its engagement in one of the notches 7, by releasing clamp nut 8 so that the hook may be moved longitudinally along the canoe and engaged in another portion of plate 2. This arrangement makes it possible to readily adjust the board or portage member 4: to any desired position to provide a quick and easy means of balancing the weight of the canoe when the packer places the canoe, upside down, on his shoulders for transportation over land.
What I claim is:
1. A canoe yoke attachment comprising notched plates attached to opposite gunwales of the canoe, a hook fOr each plate shaped to engage in any one of the notches of the plate, a portage member, and means releasably engaging the portage member to the hook.
2. In a canoe yoke attachment, the combination of L-shaped plates secured to opposite gunwales of a canoe, the downwardlyturned portions of the aforesaid plates having spaced notches, hooks releasably engaging a notch in said plates and longitudinally adjustable relative to the canoe, a portage member engaged by the hooks, and manually-operable clamping members adjustably engaging threaded portions of the hooks, for the purposes set forth.
JOHN HENRY FRANK.
