To all whom it may concern;
Be it lznown that l, FRANKLIN 0. Banner,- nrAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mackinac Island, in the county of Mackimo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line-Spacing Attachments for Type-Writ ers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved line spacing attachment fortypewriters, and has for its primary object to provide a very simple and positively operating device for antomatically rotating the platen when the carriage is returned after the writing of each line, which is particularly designed for use in conjunction with typewriting machines equipped with means for automatically returningthe carriage such, for instance, as that shown and described in my pending application for patent, Serial Number 179,170, filed July 7, 1917, and of which application the present invention constitutes a division.
it is another important object of my invention to provide a line spacing device for typewriters which is applicable to the UnderwoodStandard typewriter without me cessitating any structural changes whatsoever in any of the machine parts.
The invention has for one of its more particular objects to provide a line spacing device including a slidable part mounted on the. carriage frame and operatively connected to a part of the platen rotating mecha nism, and a fixed abutment or stop with which said slidable part engages at the end or the return movement of the carriage whereby the platen is rotated to properly space the lines.
It is also a further general object of the invention to provide a device for the above purpose which consists of comparatively few elements of very simple form so that the device as a whole may be manufactured and applied to the typewriter at relatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the ac companying drawings, in which,

Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates the carriage frame of an Underwood Standard typewriter having the usual paper guide plate 6 and the platen roller 7. As the construction, mounting, and manner of operation of the carriage is. well known in the art and constitutes no part of my present invention, the same will not be further described in detail. It will sufice to state, for the purposes of the present explanation, that the carriage frame includes the front longitudinal bar 8 which is of angular form in cross-section. Centrally of this bar, the usual outwardly projecting pointer or index member 9 is arranged for movement over the scale bar 10. 11 designates the finger bar, by means of which the platen rotating mechanism is actuated.
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, 1 provide an arm 12 which is secured to the carriage frame bar 8 and, at the rear side and centrally thereof, by means of the screw indicated at 13. This arm extends obliquely upwardly and forwardly and its other end which is disposed immediately above the forwardly projecting enlargement on said bar is of inverted U-shaped form, as indicated at 14:. This end of the arm constitutes a bearing to receive the trunnions of a roller 15. A strip of'woven tape or webbing 16 extends over this roller and one end of said tape is attached to the under side of the finger bar 11 in advance of the carriage frame bar by any preferred means. Upon the bar 8 on the right hand side of the arm 12 and in spaced relation thereto, a plate 18 is arranged, one edge of said plate being bent outwardly and downwardly as at 19. This plate at its other edge is'sccurely fixed to the. frame 'bar by means of spaced screws which also secure to the Patented. Jan. 1, libido frame bar a second relatively narrow metal plate 21 disposed between the edge of the plate 18 and the carriage frame. This plate 21 has its forward longitudinal edge which projects over the edge of the bar 8, down- ,wardly oliset as at 22, and disposed in the lsame plane with the inwardly turned edge portion 19 of the plate 18 The opposite edges of the metal plates 19 and 22 are spaced from each other and also from the under side of the plate 18, thereby forming a guide-way 23 to receive the flange 25 formed upon one end of a lug 24 which extends downwardly below the plate 18. Upon the right hand end of the plate 18, a roller 26 is mounted in spaced bearings 27 fixed to the end edge of the plate, and over this roller the tape 16 is engaged. The end of the tape is provided with a suitable eye for engagement with a headed stud'28 fixed in the flange 25 on the lug 24.
29 designates the adjustable carriage stop with which the typewriter is equipped, said stop limiting the return movement of the carriage and determining the length of the written lines. To the rear portion of this adjustable stop, an upwardly projecting finger or lug 30 is suitably fixed.
From the above description, the manner 01" operation of my invention will be readily understood. When the carriage is returned to its initial position for writing a new line, just prior to the end of such return movement, the lug 2 1 strikes the upwardly projecting finger 30 on the adjustable carriage stop, whereby this lug 24 is shifted in the guide-way 23 formed by the plates 18 and 21. The end of the tape 16 being attached to the lug 24, it is: apparent that the tape will be pulled around the roller 26 and, as
the other end of the tape is connected to the spring-held, manually operable lever 11, this lever will be pulled over toward the right and the platen rotating mechanism will be actuated to rotate the platen to the extent for which the mechanism has been adjusted. As the operator proceeds with the writing and the carriage again moves toward the left, the lug 24 moves away from the upstanding finger 20 and the lever 11 is returned to its normal position by means of the usual lever spring, thereby also re-' turning the lu 24 to its original position in the right han end of the guide-way 23. Thus, the platen will be properly rotated to space the written lines without necessitating any manual manipulations of the mechanism. It is further to be observed that the use of the present invention necessitates no changes whatever in the construction of the platen rotating mechanism as now used in machines of the type referred to, nor requires the slightest structural alteration in the usual platen carriage construction.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have devised a very simple, efficient, and serviceable line spacing attachment for typewriters and one which is well adapted for use in connection with various devices now known in the art for automatically returning the carriage, as well as the particular carriage returning means disposed in my pending application hereinbefore referred to. It is apparent that one skilled in the art may, by resorting to simple mechanical changes in the form, mounting, and arrangement of the several elements, adapt the same for use in connection with various other makes of typewritin; machines than that herein particularly referred to.
Therefore, it is to be understood that while I have herein specifically described what, at the present time, I believe to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, I nevertheless reserve the privilege of adopting all such mechanical changes as may hereafter be found to be advisable and which may fairly be considered as within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a typewriter carriage provided with platen rotating mechanism, means mounted entirely upon the carriage for rotating the platen and including a member connected to a part of the platen rotating mechanism, a part movable upon the carriage to which said member is operatively connected, and a relatively fixed ele ment mounted on the typewriter frame to actuate said movable part when the carriage is returned to its initial writing position whereby said member is operated to rotate the platen.
2. The combination with a' -typewriter carriage provided with platen rotating mechanism, of a flexible element longitudinally movable on the carriage and operatively connected to a part of the platen rotating mechanism, a slide member mounted on the carriage to which said flexible member is attached, and a relatively stationary lug mounted on the typewriter frame with which said member is adapted to engage when the carriage is returned to its initial writing position, whereby said flexible member is moved and said part operated to rotate the platen.
3.
