Be it known that I, FRED A. BRUNEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hempstead, Long Island, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
llhis invention its object to provide a toy which will be both amusing and instructive to children pieces which may be assembled in various manners to form the letters of the alphabet, numerals, and figures resembling articles or structures such as chairs, wind-mills, etc.
The invention contemplates the provision of a number of rigid pieces and a number of jointed pieces designed to serve as cennections between the rigid pieces or as terminal members, the joints being of such a nature as to permit of the jointed pieces being employed in various combinations so that with a relatively small number of such jointed pieces a relatively large number of combinations may be produced.

As'before stated, the toy present invention consists of a number of straight rigid pieces and a number of jointed pieces. Each of the straight rigid pieces is indicated by the numeral 1 and any number of these pieces may be provided and each is in the nature of a tube the ends of which the pieces embodying the Specification of Letters Patent;

The arms 2 and'3, however, may be swung upon their pivot 8 so as to assume'various angular positions with relation to each other. In- Fig. 1, for example, in forming the letter A two of the pieces shown in Fig. 3 are employed at the upper corners of the letter to connect the top bar of the letter and the side bars thereof above the lower or cross bar and in this combination the arms 2 and 3 of each piece extend at right angles with relation to each other. As shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings one of the pieces shown in Fig. 3 may be employed as a terminal part of a letter such, for example, as the letter L in Fig. 6 or the stem of the Q in Fig. 7. j
The jointed piece shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings comprises a straight arm 9 which is formed mid-way between its ends with a slot 10 which extends longitudinally and the end walls of which are beveled to form oppositely inclined shoulders 11. This piece also includes two arms indicated by the numeral 12 each of which has a flat ear 13 having a perforation 14 and provided with oppositely inclined shoulders 15 at the opposite sides of its said car 13. The ears 13 of the two arms may be fitted in overlapped relation into the slot 10, and a pivot pin 16 is fitted through the registering openings 14 and through alined openings 17 formed in the opposite side walls of the slot 10. This piece may be employed in the formation of the letter K, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, or by removing the pin 16, which may be accomplished readily due to the provision of a head 18 at one end of the said pin, one of the arms 12 may be removed and disposed at the other side of the arm 9 so as to )provide for the formation of the letter as shown in Figs. 8 and 10 of the drawings. It
will also be understood that the arms 12 may be arranged to extend in opposite directions from the opposite sides of the arm 9 in alinement with each other and that, in fact, the three arms may be assembled and adjusted to assume various angular positions with relation to each other.
The jointed piece shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings comprises an arm 20 having spaced ears 21, and two arms 22, each of which has an car 23. The several arms are assembled by overlapping the ears 23 and disposing the same between the cars 21 of the arm 20 and then passing a pivot pin 24 through all of the said ears. The arms comprising this piece may be adjusted to assume the relative positions shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings in which the arms 22 are in alin'ement and the arm 20 extends at right angles with relation thereto and so adjusted the piece may be emfor example, in forming the letter A, as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to form the letter Y, for example, the arm 20 may be vertically disposed and the arms 22 may be adjusted to incline upwardly in diverging linesto form the branches of the letter, one of the rigid members being apployed as,

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: j
1. A device of the class described comprising elements to be assembled, to form various structures or figures, including rigid members having sockets, and jointed members having ends for selective insertion'in said sockets and to be detachably held therein.
2. A device of the class described comprising elements to be assembled, to form various structures or figures, includingirrigid members having terminal sockets, and jointed members having ends in said sockets and to be detachably held therein.
3. A device of the class described comprising elements to be assembled, to form various structures or figures, including rigid tubular members, and jointed members having ends for selective insertion in the ends of the said tubular members and to be detachably held therein.
4. A device of the class described comprisg elements to be assembled, to form various structures or figures, including rigid members having sockets, and a joining piece comprising pivotally connected arms provided with coacting abutments to limit their adjustment, the ends of the arms being arranged for selective insertion in said sockets and to be detachably held therein.
5. In a device of the class described, a joining piece comprising a slotted arm, and arms having overlapped pivot ears removably fitted into the said slot, and a ivot pin removably fitted through the wa slot and through the said ears.

A device of the class described comprising elements to be assembled, to form various structures or figures, including rigid tubular members having sockets, and a joinin member comprising pivotally connectec l arms angularly adjustable and adapted to be fitted at their outer ends selectively into the said sockets.
