Description
M. J. BIRD BAG CARRIER.
APPLICATION FILED mm]. 1917.
1,246,53Q Patented Nov. 13, 1917.
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE:
MAITLANID JOHN BIB/D, OF CENTRAL FALLS, RHODE ISLAND.
BAG-CARRIER.
Application filed. January 31, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAITLAND J. BIRD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Central Falls, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Carrier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a device adapted to be applied as a handle to a paper bag, and includes means to engage the folded mouth of the bag. In its entirety the invention includes a stiffener bar adapted to be infolded by the folded mouth of the bag and be received with the bag folds in the gripping member of the handle.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a face View of my improved bag handle and a portion of a paper bag;
Fig. 2 is a. transverse vertical section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33, Fig. 1;
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the handle section;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the stiffener bar;
Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view of the folded mouth of the paper bag;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the device attached to the bag.
In carrying out my invention a handle section is provided, consisting of a plate 10 which, at one side, presents av broad surface on which advertisements may be displayed, the purpose being to form the device of cheap. stiff material preferably paper or fiber that it may be used as an advertising device by grocers and other merchants. The handle section 10 is formed at the top with a thickened portion or handle proper, preferably by making a three-sided cut in the material of the said section or plate and then folding material 12 defined by the cut upwardly and onto the still integral top bar 13 to enlarge and stiffen the latter so that it constitutes a substantial hand hold. At the same time an oblong opening 14 is pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

duced for the fingers, the opening preferably being rounded at the ends by cutting away the material.
The lower end of the plate 10 is return bent to produce an upturned flange 15 which is adapted to be passed beneath the folds of a paper bag A, the partially folded bag be- 7 ing diagrammatically indicated in Fig. 6.
WVith the mouth of the bag folded one or more times on itself, the flange 15 may be slipped beneath the folds as best shown in Figs. 2' and 7, the flange 15 being spaced from the adjacent face of the plate 10 sufficiently to accommodate the bag folds. In the complete form of the invention in practice, the same includes a fiat stiffener bar 11 which is adapted to be infolded by the bag folds. One end 16 of the stiffener bar 11 is return bent, the returned end serving to facilitate the manipulation of the bar and also constituting a finger hold to remove the bar endwise if desired. The returned end 16 furthermore is spaced from the bar 11 to receive and overlap the adjacent end of the handle section. The central portion of the stiffener bar 11 has a lateral bend as at 17 to frictionally engage the plate 10 within the flange 15 when the device is not in use, thereby preventing the separation of the parts.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A bag handle including a stiffener bar adapted to be infolded by a folded bag mouth, said bar having an end thereof return bent, and a handle section having an upturned flange adapted to be slipped into engagement with the infolded stiffener bar to clasp the same and the bag folds, said return bent end of the stiffener bar being adapted to receive the adjacent end portion of said handle section.
2. A bag handle including a fiat stifl'ener bar adapted to be infolded by a folded bag mouth, and a plate having a handle and having the bottom portion of the plate upturned and spaced from the adjacent face of the plate to accommodate the infolded stiffener bar and the bag folds, the said stiffener bar having a transverse bend to frictionally engage the said plate when the device is not in use.
3. In a bag attachment of the class described, a handle section having the bottom infolded in the bag folds, one end of the said portion thereof upturned and disposed apbar being return bent and spaced from the proximately parallel with and spaced from adjacent face of the bar to accommodate the the adjacent face of the said section, to acends of the bag folds and the adjacent end 10 commodate a folded bag mouth, together of the handle section and-overlap the same. With a. separate stifi'ener bar adapted to be MAITLAND JOHN BIRD.
