Be it known that I, THOMAS H. COSTELLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Map- Mountings, of which the following is a specitcation.

My invention relates to map mountings and is particularly adapted to be used in connection with those which are mounted on spring rollers and placed in frames, whereby they may be automatically rolled up and protected when not in use. The lower end of such maps heretofore usually has been protected by a rod formed by a plurality of strips of wood semi-circular in cross section between which the lower edge of the map is placed and in which position, it is secured by glue, or nails, or both. The ends of said strips, extend past the edges of the map to engage the frame and limit the movement of the map; but as the map is released or rolled up, the pull of the spring of the roller upon which it is mounted frequently draws the projecting ends of the map stick into violent contact with the sides of the frame. The map sticks are frequently broken, thereby, while the maps are torn from their attachment and frequently destroyed.

It is the object of my invention to provide a composite protecting rod, which may be so securely attached to the edge of the map as to make its displacement in service practically impossible. The device is so simple and cheap that the expense thereof and of the application is practically not greater than that of the ones ordinarily used.

The principles of my invention are illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure l shows a front elevation of a portion of a map cabinet.

Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof, on the dotted line 2-2.

Fig. 3 shows the inside faces of two identical strips of molding, which together form my improved map stick.

Further describing my invention with reference to the drawings, 1 represents a spring roller attached at the ends 2 and 3 in the well known manner to the side pieces 4 and 5 of a map cabinet and 6, represents the map rolled thereon. My improved map stick is formed of two pieces of molding as shown in Fig. 3. They comprise the body portion 7 having the outer wall 8 in the segment of a circle. The inner part comprises the fiat faces 9 and the reciprocally formed concave portion 10 and convex portion 11. The two pieces of molding represented in Fig. 3 represent strips from the same or an identically formed piece, and it will be noted that when the part designated A is turned over on the part designated B, the convex portion of one strip will be received within the convex portion of the other strip, the two interlocking parts thus forming together a rod which is substantially circular in crosssection. When the lower edge of the map is placed between two pieces of the described molding cut to proper lengths, and the two are pressed together, the lower edge of the map will be forced to follow the interior contour of the pieces and be securely clamped between them. In practice, I prefer to spread glue on the inner faces of the moldings before the map is attached to them and strengthen them or support the hold thereof by the use of screws or nails 12. It will be seen that a perfect' attachment of the map stick and the map is thus made. The moldings used can be prepared by the use of but one form of sticker knife, while a stock for manufacturing purpose need consist of but one pattern of material.

I claim:

1. A map mounting including a cylindrical body-portion comprising a pair of cooperating identically formed strips having locking faces, each face being formed to provide a tongue and groove defining a continuous reverse curve, and engaging flat surfaces formed on the locking faces of each strip laterally of the reverse curve.

2. A map mounting including a cylindrical body-portion comprising a pair of identically formed strips having coperating locking faces, each face having an S-shaped curve formed centrally thereon, and engaging flat surfaces formed on the remaining portions of the locking faces outwardly of the curve. l
