Be it known that l, EDWARD A. RUPERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aberdeen, in the county of Grays Harbor and State of liVashington, have invented a new and useful Film-Case, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention relates to a shipping case for use in transporting moving picture films, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a fireproof shipping case having means therein whereby the air within the case can be kept in a moist condition, thus to prevent the film from becoming brittle and unfit for use.

A further object is to provide a shipping case of this type which can be easily carried from place to place and which, when closed, seals the contents of the case against the action of heat and from outside moisture.

`With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in thccombination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

`Referring to the figures by characters of reference l designates a rectangular box or case preferably made with its bottom and walls formed of inner and outer thicknesses 2 and 8 of sheet metal between which is arranged insulating material shown at Il. An arcuate false bottom 5 is arranged within the casing and is soldered or otherwise secured at its center, upon the bottom of said lining 2. This false bottom provides substantially triangular spaces G in the lower bottom portion of the case and formed within the false bottom and opening into these compartments or spaces are slots 7 in which Specication of Letters Patent.

are detachably mounted closure strips S. Each of these strips has a series of openings 9 therein, said openings being partly closed by a strip of wire fabric indicated at 10, said fabric being held in place by folding the marginal portions of the strip inwardly as indicated at 11. These inwardly folded portions are then bent outwardly to provide retaining flanges 12 and 13, the flange 12 being much wider than the flange 13 and said flanges being designed to engage the opposed longitudinal walls of the slots 7. As shown particularly in Fig. 4e the strips S can be slid upwardly to disengage the flange 13 from the adjoining wall of the slot 7, whereupon the strip can be tilted upwardly to disengage flange 13 from the opening 7 after which flange 12 can be withdrawn from the other wall of the opening 7. Thus the strip can be readily placed or removed from position to give access to the space 6. Each of the spaces (iis designed to be lled with an absorbent material indicated at 13 and which material is adapted to be saturated with a liquid suitable for use in maintaining the air in the case in a moist condition.

rThe lid 27 of the case is also made of inner and outer thicknesses of metal separated by a packing 28 of insulating material. The baelr portion of the lid is adapted to rest upon the back wall of the caso while flanges 29 extend from the front and side walls of the lid or cover and are adapted to rest on the corresponding walls of the case, the cover being extended between the side walls as will be apparent by referring to Eig. 2. A hinge strip 30 is secured across the back portion of the cover and has end ears 31 which are pivotally connected as at 141-. to the side walls of the case. A handle 15 is .mounted upon the middle portion of the cover and mounted for rotation within the cover adjacent the front edge thereof is a stem 16 having a head 17 provided with a depending flange 18. A notch 1f) is provided in this flange and is adapted to receive one end of a spring tongue 2O secured to the cover 27 and which thus serves to hold the stem against rotation. Stem 16 projects below the cover into a guide 21. carried by said cover and slidably mounted in this guide is a bolt 22 having a slot 23, one wall of which is provided with rack teeth 24. Stem 1G projects into the slot 23 and has teeth 25 thereon meshing with the teeth 24.

Thus when the stem is rotated in one direction bolt 22 will be projected into a recess 26 formed in the front wall of the case 1 While, when the stem is rotated in the opposite direction said bolt will be retracted from the recess. The spring tongue 20 is designed to hold the head 17 against rotation while the bolt 22 is in its projected position.

The interior proportions of the case are such that any desired number of reels R may be held therein, the curvature of the false bottom 5 corresponding substantially with that of the periphery of each reel.

After the material 13 has been saturated' and placed in the lower corner portions of the case, the strips 8 can be slipped into place and the reels can then be placed in the case and the cover secured. As long as the cover is in position the contents of the case will be protected from heat and outside moisture but the air contained within the case will be kept moist by the material contained under the false bottom. Thus the case can be used for shipping reels considerable distances without danger of their becoming aiected by climatic conditions or being injured by fire or water.

The upper portions of the false bottom, which are also spaced from the walls of the case, are preferably formed with openings 32 whereby a circulation of moist air will be set up through the openings 7 and 32.

Vhat is claimed is l. A shipping case for moving picture iilms, including insulating walls, a false bottom secured in the case and having slots therein opening into spaces in the lower corner portions of the case and below the false bottom, an absorbent material insertible through the slots and in said spaces, and a t'oraminous closure removably mounted across each slot.
