To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM MoDoWALL MATHEsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improve ments in valves designed more especially for controlling the discharge of fluids of such a nature as to render confinement difficult, and the invention aims to provide a simple, economical and eflicient form of An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- 7 Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of avalve constructed in accordance with my said in- Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on lines 2-2 and 3-3 respectively of Fig. 1.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates the valve casing rovided with means at one end for connectlng it to the fluid container, which means may conveniently consist of screw threads indicated at 1.
The valve casing has an interior longitudinal passa e referably cylindrical) which is divi ed into two valve chambers 1 and 1 by an internal flange 1 having a central opening and providing oppositely facing. valve seats- A pair of opposed valves 2 and 3 are located respectively in the chambers 1 and 1 and are movably guided therein and have end portions suitably shaped to cooperate with the oppositely faced valve seats, as by forming them of cone shape, as indicated at 2 and 2.
The bodies of these valves are arranged to permit 'fluid to pass them when unseated, which may conveniently be accomplished by making their cylindrical portions of less diameter than the valve chambers. The movement of the valve member 3 withinits cham-- her 1 may be limited by a plug 4 screwed into the'end of the casing and provided with a fluid pressure 4.
One of the valve members, as for example, member 2, has a threaded axial extension 2 which engages a corresponding threaded axial recess in the opposing member. The
valve member 3, while capable of longitudinal movement, is held against rotation by suitable means, such for example as a lon-' gitudinal pin 0 mounted in the plug 4 near the edge thereof, which pin engages a corresponding groove in the wall of the valve member.
The other valve member 2 is capable of rotary as well as longitudinal movement,
and it will be seen that if said'member 2 is rotated in one direction. the threaded extension will be unscrewed from the recess in the valve 3, while rotation in the other dimotion will screwsaid extension into the recess. As the valve 3 seats in the direction of flow of fluid through the casing, it will be held against the coacting valve seat during such unscrewing action as long as valve member 2 is capable of longitudinal movement away from its valve seat, but as soon as such longitudinal movement is checkedfurther rotation will force the valve 3 away from its seat against the fluid pressure.
A convenient means for efi'ecting and limiting this movement of the valve member-2 is to provide a rotatable member 5 journaled in. a" suitable screw plug or stuifing box in the end of the casing and capable of being rotated by a hand wheel 6.
This member 5 has a transverse slot 5 and acorresponding slot 2 is formed in the end of the valve member 2. A key piece 7 is secured in one of said slots, for example slot 2", and projects into the other slot so as to cause said members 2 and 5 to rotate together while permitting relative longitudinal movement.
Supposing both valves to be seated, rotation of the hand wheel 6 in a counter-clockwise direction will unscrew the threaded extension of the valve member 2, and as the valve 3 is held seated by the fluid ressure the valve member 2 will recede om its valve seat until its rear end contacts with the front end of the rotatable member 5, which, being incapable of longitudinal movement, will arrest further backward movement of the valve body 2; Continued rotary movement of the hand wheel will cause the unscrewing action of the threaded extension of the member 2 to force the valve member 3 away from its seat against the fluid pressure as said valve member 3 is held against rotary movement in the valve casing by the tongue and groove engagement hereinbefore described.
Rotation of the hand Wheel in a clockwise direction will produce a screwing action on the threaded extension with the result that the valve member 3 will first be seated under the fluid pressure and thereafter the valve member 2 will be seated, and both valves pressed tightly against their seats by the tightening of the threaded extension.
' The outlet fromthe valve chamber is in the shapeof a passage 8 which may be placed in'communication with any suitable means for receiving the fluid, a convenient form of connection to such receiver being in the shape of the screw threads 9. A safety outlet is also provided is the shape of a passage 10, the outlet of which is closed by a screw plug 11 having a fusible ,terial l2 filling a passage therethrough as sIho, or the outlet may be closed by a metal diaphra or other suitable device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a valve of the character described, a valve casing having alined valve chambers with an intervening double faced valve seat, one of said chambers constituting an inlet passage, a floating valve located in said inlet passage and having means for holding the same against rotary movement, a screw plug in the end of said inlet chamber for limiting the movement of said. floating valve, said plug havin a fluid passage, a valve in the other cham er mounted to have rotary and longitudinal movement therein, one of said valves having an axial threaded extension engaging the corresponding recess in the other valve, and means for rotating said second valve and limiting the longitudinal movement thereof, substantially as described. lln testimony whereof, I afigx my signature.
