To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, F RANK l/Vnncn, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of Elysian, in the county of Lesueur and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checking Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to checking devices,

1 and particularly that class of checking devices wherein a pad of numbered slips are embodied in the device for use as identifying the owner of the parcel, coat or other article that is checked.

One object of my invention is to provide a checking device that may be readily attached to articles of wearing apparel, grips, umbrellas, or anything of such a nature that it would. be likely to be checked in a parcel room or public place of any nature.

Another object of my invention is to provide multiple identifying means associated with the checking device.

Another object of my invention is to pro- 1 'vide means for quickly changing one pad of identifying slips for another in the checking device.

lVith these and incidental objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are hereinafter described with reterence to the drawing which accompanles and forms a part of this specification.

The U shaped ends may be spread apart as shown in the dotted position by pressing ends 8 and 9 of the body and may then be passed through a buttonhole of a garment, snapped over a grip handle, umbrella, or snapped onto any parcel, returning always to the position shown in the drawing when the pressure on the ends 8 and 9 is released.

Associated with the body at 9 is a pad of checks, of paper or other suitable material, preferably numbered and held in position by the spring clamp 10, as better illustrated in Fig. 2.

As will be seen by Fig. 2, the spring clamp 10 is pressed against the pad 11 by the coil spring 12 in a manner well known, and the spring combination may be released from the pad by depressing the lip 13 and the pad then replaced with a new one of a similar nature.

In using the device, when a party brings a parcel to be checked, the device is clamped onto or through the parcel and one of the slips of the pad 11 detached and given to the party checking the parcel.

Where a number of people in a group give their articles to be checked, these articles may all be grouped together and the checking device attached thereto and a slip given to each one of the party, the numbers on the slips being the same, so that either one will have means of identifying the parcels so checked.

Also if one person or more should check a number of articles that could not be all clamped by the device, the clamp may be put upon one of the articles, the slip given to the owner, and other slips inserted or attached to the others of the articles that he is checking. While I have described my invention and illustrated it in one particular design, I do not wish it understood that I limit myself to this construction, as it is evident that the application of my invention may be varied in many ways within the scope of the following claims.

Claims 1. In a checking device the combination of a body comprised of two sections joined with a hinged connection, means on one of said sections for clamping a pad of identifying slips, a pair of U shaped extensions assoloo ciated with said pair o1 sections, the outer end of which normally connects, and the inner end of which forms a spring for holding said pair of sections normally apart.
