PICTURE-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21?, 1917.
Application filed July 22, 1916. Serial No. 110,784.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TOWNSEND on M. TTAWKIJS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corning, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pic tureFrames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a picture frame which is preferably composed of glass, having a rim and a picture displaying portion surrounded by the rim, and a back piece which is adapted to cooperate with the frame in. displaying the picture.
The invention further relates to certain details of construction which go to make up the preferred embodiment of the invention, such for instance, as constructing the picture displaying portion of the frame by providing an integral offset on the glass frame, and by constructing the back piece in such a manner as to enable it to be readily interlocked with or disengaged from the frame.
The object of the invention is to realize the above stated characteristics, whereby a simple, ornamental and unique device will be produced.
The preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing will be referred to throughout the following detail description.
In said drawings v Figure 1 is a perspective view of the picture frame;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view;
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the several parts of the back piece which are employed in interlocking the back piece with the frame.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A represents the frame which is preferably composed of glass having a mm B and a picture displaying portion surrounded by therim, said picture displaying portion in the present instance, being preferably produced by providing an integral offset portion (1. D represents the back piece which is adapted to cooperate with the frame in displaying the picture. This back p1ece preferably comprises a number of plles of cardboard covered by some material such as velvet, constructed in a shape to be readily received by the picture displaying portion of the frame, and interlocked therewith the back piece.
immediately behind the picture. In order to effect the inter-locking of the back piece with the frame, the inner wall of the. picture displaying portion is provided with recesses or keepers E which are adapted to receive the interlocking means carried by This interlocking means preferably comprises a bolt F having a reduced head F and a dowel pin F the dowel pin being rigidly secured to the back piece adapted to protrude a sufficient distance from its side to effect an engagement with its keeper E. The bolt F is slidably mounted in the recess G in the back piece and adapted to be retained in engagement with its keeper E by a spring G also mounted in the recess G. The bolt, together with its actuating spring is suitably confined or housed in the recess G by a )air of plates H and I which are located a jace-nt the recess on both sides of the back piece, whereby they are adapted to overlie the recess. The means for securing the plates to the sides of the back piece preferably comprises providing the plate I with spurs I which are adapted to pass through suitable openings J surrounding the recess I in the back piece, and when passed through they are adapted to be bent over the plate H. The plate I is further provided with a slot K through which a suitable manipulating stud L, carried by the bolt F is adapted to work. This stud is employed in manipulating the bolt to and from engagement with its keeper E, whereby the back piece may be interlocked with or disengaged from the frame.
A suitable support M is carried by the back piece for supporting the frame in upright position.
I claim:
1. In a picture frame, a back piece adapted to cooperate with the frame in displaying a picture, said back piece having means adapted to releasably engage the frame comprising projections extending outwardly from the sides thereof, said frame having a picture receiving portion provided with recesses on its inner walls adapted to receive the projections on the back piece, said back piece having a recessed portion provided on one of its sides, one of said projections be ing slidably mounted in said recess, plates carried on both faces of the back piece adapted to overlie the recess for confining the projection therein, a slot formed in one of said plates and a stud carried by said sliding projection adapted to extend through said slot, whereby the projection may be actuated to engage and disengage one of said recesses providedin the inner wall of the picture receiving portion of the frame.
2; In a picture frame, a back piece adapted to cooperate with the frame in displaying a picture, said back piece having means adapted to releasably engage the frame, comprising projections extending outwardly from the sides thereof, said frame having a picture receiving portion provided with recesses on its inner walls adapted to receive the projections on the back piece, said back piece having a recessed. portion, one of said projections being slidably mounted in said recess, openings provided in the back piece adjacent said recess, plates carried on both faces of the back piece adapted to overlie the recess for confining the slidably mounted projection therein, spurs carried by one of said plates passing through said openings in the back piece, adapted to engage the other plate, and a stud on said sliding projection, a slot provided on one of said plates adapted to receive said stud, said stud providing means, whereby the projection may be actuated to engage or disengage one of the said recesses provided in the inner Wall of the picture receiving portion of the frame.
3. A picture frame composed of glass and Copies of this embodying in its structure a rim and a picture displaying portion surrounded by said rim, and a back piece adapted to be received in said picture displaying portion and cooperate with the frame in displaying a picture; said back piece having means adapted to releasably engage the frame, comprising projections extending outwardly from the sides thereof, recesses provided in the inner walls of the picture displaying portion adapted to receive the projections on the back piece, a recessed portion provided on one side of said back piece, one of said projections being slidably mounted in said recess, openings provided in the back piece adjacent said recess, plates carried on both faces of the back piece adapted to overlie the recess and confine the slidably mounted projection therein, spurs carried by one of said plates passing through said openings in the back piece, and adapted to engage the other plate, a stud on said sliding projection, a slot provided on one of said plates adapted to receive said stud, said stud providing means whereby the projection may be actuated toflengage or disengage one of the said recesses provided in the inner wall of the picture displaying portion of the rim.
The foregoing specification signed at Corning, New York.
