To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, F nnDERIcK J. HEY- BACI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewer-Traps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trap valves for street sewers, or the like, and has for its main object to produce a simple and inexpensive construction which will be efiicient in operation.
In street sewers of the usual type which are provided with an unprotected opening for receiving the drainage or waste water, it is very frequent that stones, rocks, balls and even small children fall into or are washed through said opening into the sewer. It is the purpose of this invention to provide suitable means for preventing the passage of articles or persons into the sewer, but which will allow the drainage to be taken off by the sewer. It is also the purpose of this invention to provide means which will make sewer traps more sanitary, preventing the emanation of fumes, odors and mosquitos, and thus provide a safeguard against the spread of disease.
The invention contemplates the provision of a valve gate arranged to cover the inlet opening of the sewer and suitable means constantly tending to hold the gate substantially closed against the passage of solid substances such as balls, bricks, etc. The invention further contemplates provision of means which are acted upon and operated by a restricted flowof drainage through the substantially closed valve gate and which releases a locking devicefor permitting the valve gate to open to its fullest extent.
\Vith the above objects in View, the invention consists in a certain novel arrangement of parts and combination of elements hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings which form a part of the specification Figure 1 is a top plan view of a sewer trap with the invention applied thereto;

Like reference characters denote similar like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the sewer trap casting provided with the conduit 2 leading to the sewer pipe and having a trap member 3 adapted to receive the drainage or sewage from the opening 4, which receives the said drainage from the street gutter 5. The opening or inlet t of the trap is formed by the chute 6 which is suitably mounted or formed with the casting 1 and extends for a distance into the interior of the latter. The trap 1 has the top 7 integral, or otherwise mounted, thereupon and is provided with a suitable man-hole cov ered by the member 8. p
Suitably secured to the under side of the top 7 and directly overjthe inner end of the chute 6 are the lugs 9 having the valve gate 10 pivotally suspended therefrom. The valve gate 10, in its normal suspended position, is adapted to overlie the inner end of the chute 6, thereby closing the latter. Suit ably' mounted adjacent the man-hole in the top 7 of the trap and the valve gate 10 are the spaced bracket arms 11 having at their free ends the slotted bearings 12 adapted to pivotally and removably support the ends of the shaft 13 of the valve controlling means.
The valve controlling means comprise a plate member 14 pivotally secured to the arms 15 of the shaft 13, the arms 15 being adapted to limit the movement of the plate about'its-pivot in one'direction, thereby rendering the plate and arms 15 substantially rigid for a continued movement in the said direction. Extending from the plate is a locking dog 16 adapted normally to lie in the path of a'similar projection 17 formed, or otherwise mounted, on the valve gate 10. An arm 17 having a weight 1'7 at its eX- tremity is suitably secured to the shaft 13 on the opposite side thereof from the plate 14.
The weight 17 tends to rock the shaft 13' and thus move the free end of the plate 14 upwardly so as to move the locking dog 16 into the path of the projection 1 of the valve gate. A stop arm 18 extends from one of the bracket arms 11 to limit the downward movement of the weight 17 and the upward movement of the plate 14; thus, the weight 17 will normally hold the projection in the way of the projection 17. The projections l6 and 17, under normal conditions, are so arranged as to be slightly spaced apart, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. This spacing apart of the projections 16' and 17 will permit the valve gate to open slightly to permit a restricted flow of the drainage or fluid past the valve, but will prohibit articles such as bricks, balls, or the like, from pass ing through the chute 6 into the trap 3.
The plate 14 extends under the inner end of the chute 6 in the path of the restricted flow of drainage through the opening 4. Consequently, when drainage is to be carried off by the sewer, pressure of the drainage against the valve gate 10 will slightly open the same and allow a restricted fiow of drainage to fall upon the plate 14. The flow of this drainage upon the plate 14 will counterbalance the weighted arm 17 a and will move the free end of the plate 14 downwardly. The projection 16 carried by the plate 14 is thus moved out of the way of the projection 17 of the valve gate 10, where upon the pressure of the drainage against the valve gate will open the valve gate 10 and permit the drainage to pass freely into the trap 3. As will be obvious from Fig. 2 so long as the drainage flows through the chute 6, the free end of the plate 14 will be held down against the gravitative move ment of the weight 17 and the locking dog 16 will be out of the way of the projection 17. As soon as the drainage ceases to flow through the opening 4, the valve gate will be moved by gravity to its closed position and the weight 17 will move the dog 16 into the path of the projection 17. A gasket 18 may be secured to the inner edge of the chute 6 against which the valve gate 10 will rest.
N hen it is desired to permanently lock the valve gate 10, even against the flow of drainage, a latch member 19carried by the valve gate 10 is placed over a suitable hook in the inlet opening 4. A hook and chain 20 is secured to the back of the Valve plate 10 to engage with the eyelet 21 on the top 7 of the trap when it is desired to permanently hold the valve gate in open position. When it is desired to remove the plate 14 and the locking mechanism through the manhole in the top 7, the plate 14 is folded upon its pivot and the shaft 13 is raised from its bearing 12, and the whole mechanism then turned to a sidewise position, as shown in Fig. 4. The parts may then be easily removed through the man-hole in the top 7.
In Fig. 6 I show the shaft 13 carrying an arm 22 rigidly and removably secured to the 22 and 25, said link having a loose or slotted connection with the arm 25 to permit a slight opening of the valve gate 10 so as to permit a restricted flow of drainage to pass into the trap, as above set forth. A large flow of water passing through the opening 4 will act upon the plate 14 and move its free end downwardly, which movement will operate the valve gate 10 through the medium of the link 26 to open and permit of the free and unobstructed passage of the drainage into the trap. It will also be obvious that the farther the plate 14 is moved about its pivot against the gravitative movement of the weight 17 the wider the valve gate will open the passage or opening 4.
What I claim is 1. In combination, a valve, automatic means for holding said valve substantially closed against the passage of solid articles past said valve while permitting the flow of fluid past the same, and means controlled by said passage of fluid past said substantially closed valve for automatically rendering said holding means ineffective.
2. In combination, a swinging valve member, a pivoted member disposed adjacent said valve and having means to engage the valve and secure the same in a substantially closed position, while permitting a restricted flow of fluid past said valve, said pivoted member having another portion adapted to be acted upon by said restricted flow of fluid to release said valve.
3; In combination, a pivoted valve mem ber having a projection, a second pivoted member having a locking dog adapted to be automatically moved into engagement with said projection to hold the valve substantially closed, while permitting a restricted flow of fluid thereby, and a projection carried by said second pivoted member and arranged to be operated by said restricted flow of fluid to move said dog out of engagement with the projection of said valve, whereby said valve is allowed to open. 7
4. In combination, avalve member, a movable lock member adapted to be automatically moved into engagement with said valve member to hold the latter substantially closed, While permitting a restricted flow of fluid thereby, and a valve releasing member arranged to be actuated by said restricted flow of fluid for operating said lock member, whereby the valve is permitted to open.
5. In combination with a sewer trap having an inlet opening, of a valve member arranged to close said opening, means disposed adjacent the valve for normally securing the same substantially closed against the passage of solid substances into the sewer, and means operable by a restricted flow of fluid through said substantially closed valve for releasing said securing means.
6. In combination with a sewer trap provided with an inlet opening, of a valve member for said opening, a movable lock member adapted to be automatically moved into engagement with said valve member to hold the same substantially closed, while permitting a restricted flow of fluid into the trap, and valve releasing means arranged to be acted upon by said restricted flow of fluid for rendering said lock member ineffective.
7 In combination with a sewer trap provided with an inlet opening, of a pivoted valve gate carrying a projection thereupon and adapted to normally close said opening, a second pivoted member disposed in said trap and carrying a locking dog adapted to be automatically moved into the path of said projection to hold the valve substantially closed, and an extension carried by said second pivoted member and arranged to be acted upon by a restricted flow of fluid past said substantially closed valve for moving said locking dog out of the path of said projection.
8. The combination with a sewer trap provided with an inlet opening, of a valve member for said opening, a movable looking member adapted to be automatically moved into engagement with said valve member for normally holding the same in substantially a closed position, while per- 'mitting a restricted flow of fluid into the trap, valve releasing means arranged to be acted upon by said restricted flow for rendering said locking member ineffective, and means for automatically moving said looking member and releasing means into normal position when the liquid ceases to flow through said opening.
9. The combination with a sewer trap provided with an inlet opening, of a pivoted gate provided with a projection thereupon and adapted to normally close said opening, a second pivoted member disposed in the trap and provided with a locking dog adapted to be automatically moved into the path of said projection, so as to hold the valve substantially closed, an extension carried by said second pivoted member and arranged to be acted upon by a restricted flow of fluid past said substantially closed valve for moving the locking dog out of the path of said projection, and means mounted on said second pivoted member to move said locking dog and extension into normal and locking position when the fluid ceases to flow through said inlet opening.
10. The combination with a sewer trap provided with an inlet opening and a cover for said trap, said cover having a man-hole, of a valve arranged in the trap and adapted to normally close said inlet opening, and means mounted on said trap cover within the trap on opposite sides of the man-hole in said cover for controlling the opening and closing of said valve, said means being constructed to collapse and be withdrawn through said man-hole at will.
11. In combination, a normally closed valve, lock means therefor permitting of a normally restricted opening thereof, and means operated by substances passing through said valve by virtue of its restricted opening, to render said lock means inoperative.
