To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOIIN E. SorInNCK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pouring-\ ozzle Closures for Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of cans having pouring nozzles.
Heretofore cans with pouring nozzles for containing syrup and other like articles have usually been furnished with screw cap closures, and considerable difliculty and annoyance is often experienced in removing the screw caps owing to the screw threaded cap sticking fast, especially when the can is filled with syrup or other gummy or sticky material liable to harden. And if the screw threads in the sheet metal nozzle and sheet metal cap are misformed or become slightly distorted, difficulty is also experienced in turning the screw cap down sufficiently to cause it to properly and effectually clamp the gasket or sealing disk which is interposed between the nozzle and screw cap to seal the can liquid tight.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eflicient construction of pouring nozzle closure for syrup and other cans which may be cheaply manufactured, which will serve to securely close the can liquid tight with certainty and reliability, and Which at the same time may be readily opened.
My invention consists in a syrup or other can having a smooth, drawn sheet metal pouring nozzle provided with an inturned flange at its upper edge forming a gasket seat in connection with an Outside fitting seamless friction closure cap having a seat on the inside to receivethe sealing gasket, and an external rolled rim at its lower edge to strengthen and stiffen the same and afford a pry-off rim for removing the outside fitting friction closure cap, the can itself having a fulcrum rim adjacent to the pouring nozzle, and the interengaging friction seat walls of the nozzle and cap serving to hold the cap securely in place and the gasket firmly compressed between the nozzle and cap when the cap is forcibly driven home on the nozzle.

In the drawing, A represents the body of the can, B the top head, C the bottom head, D the pouring nozzle and F the outside fitting friction cap closure therefor and G the interposed gasket or sealing disk. The body A of the can may be of any suitable shape, preferably rectangular. The top head B is furnished with an upwardly projecting marginal flange 7) which fits inside the upper end of the body A, and a depending flange 6 surrounding and embracing the upper end of the body of the can which fits in the channel or groove formed by the top head flanges Z2 6 The marginal flanges Z2 6 of the head B, in connection with the end of the body constitute a fulcrum rim for removing the outside friction cap closure F from the nozzle D.
The top head B is also preferably fur nished with an upwardly projecting flange Z2 surrounding the small pouring opening B therein. The pouring nozzle D is a smooth, drawn seamless sheet metal cylindrical shell and surrounds at its lower end the upturned flange b of the top head to which it is securely soldered. The pouring nozzle D is provided at its upper end with an integral seamless inwardly projecting flange d, the same being preferably furnished with an annular bead or shoulder 6Z1 to afford an eflicient sealing seat or bearing against the gasket G which is interposed between the outside friction cap F and the nozzle D.
The outside fitting friction closure cap F is a seamless drawn sheet metal shell of cylindrical form and has an interior friction seat wall 7 adapted to tightly and snugly engage the exterior friction seat wall 0Z of the nozzle D and to hold the cap securely on the nozzle by frictional engagement when it is pressed home. The Outside fitting friction closure cap F has an external stiffening or strengthening roll 7 at its lower edge which also serves as a pryofl rim for removing the friction cap F. The friction cap F is preferably furnished with an annular gasket seat or channel f at its upper end, the same conforming generally in cross section to the raised shoulder or bead d of the annular flange (Z of the nozzle D. The gasket or sealing disk Gr is preferably annular and is securely clamped and held between the outside fitting friction cap F and nozzle D by the tight frictional engagement of the cap and nozzle when the cap is forced home on the nozzle.
I claim 1. A pouring nozzle can having an upstanding stifiened rim at the edge of the top of the body and at the end of the top of the bodyadjacent said stiffened rim and spaced inwardly therefrom, a pouring nozzle of relatively small diameter extending upwardly from the top of said body and above said stiffened rim a substantial distance, said nozzle having a cylindrical non-tapering exterior friction wall and" an inwardly extending flange at the top thereof, a cap for said nozzle having a non-tapering internal friction wallof length sufficient to bring its bottom edge below the upper edge of said stiffened rim, said lower edge being bent back upon itself to stiffen said cap and to provide with said stiffened rim means for engaging an opening tool, and a gasket arranged between the fiange on the pouring nozzle and the top of said cap.

A aourin nozzlercan havin an n Standing stiffened rim around the end of the extending upwardly from the top of said body and above said stiffened rim a substantial-distance, said nozzle having a'cylindrical non tapering exterior frictlon wall and an inwardly extending flange at the top 7 thereof, a cap for said nozzle having a'nontapering internal friction wall of length sufficient to bring-its bottom edge below the upper edge of said stiffened rim, said lower edge being bent back upon itself to stifien said cap and to provide with said stiffened rim means for engagingan opening tool, and a gasket arranged within the friction wall of the cap between the flange on the pouring nozzle and the'top'of the said cap, the friction wall of the cap at its upper end being extended directly inward to engage above said gasket.
