This depression forms a settling chamber iu which the heavier matter removed from the dishesaccumulates and which is thus prevented troni Ybeing repeatedly washed over the dishes and the bottom may be so inclined that the settling chamber is deepest at that end containing the faucet.

Ar` barrel 10 is rotatably mounted on the sides of the tub. As shown herein bearings 1l are located on opposite sides of the top edges ot the tub and trunnions 19e-13 are rigidly secured to the barrel and are mounted in these bearings. rl`he. trunnion 123 may be supplied with a handle. lelas a means for turning the barrel.

A basket l5 is loosely mounted on studs 16 projecting inwardly from thee-enter ot the barrel, in the lforni of construction shown vthese studs benignpart of the trunnions hereinbefore described. This basket a dei ail view in section through is preferably made from perforated innterial, as wire netting or the like, within which dishes 17 or like articles may be placed for cleaning purposes.

The barrel 10 is provided with buckets so made that in the rotation of the barrel water will be taken up from the tub 7 and dashed over the articles within the basket the barrel is rotated. In the structure shown in Figs. 1,2, and 3 the buckets are of different forms, those denoted by the numeral 1S consisting of grooves extending from end to end ot' the barrel, the ends of the grooves being closed by end plates 19 constituting a part of the barrel. These buckets are provided with openings 20 through 4which the water escapes to the interior of the barrel where it-is dashed upon the articles in the basket, as hereinbefore described. Another set consisting of buckets 30 are deeper at the lengthwise center of the barrel than at the ends, the bottom gradually sloping toward the periphery of the barrel, and openings 31 are formed in the bottom, these openings inclining toward the ends of 'the barrel. Another set of buckets are deeper at the ends than 1n the center, these buckets having openings 33 inclining toward the lengthwise center of the barrel. lt will thus be seen that the water picked Yup by the buckets is projected into the barrel in different directions, both toward the iengthwise center, away from the lengthwise ter, and in a diainetrical line so that the contents receive streams from all directions, insuring a thorough washing.

Openings of any suitable form may be made through the wall of the barrel into the buckets to permit water to How thereinto. In the form of construction herein shown, a slot 21 opposite the bucket being provided for this purpose.

As a convenient means for containing knives, forks and the like a tray 24 may be suspended Within the basket 15, this tray having hooks 25 to engage the edge of the basket. This tray is preferably formed of Wire suitable to permit water to drain freely from the articles therein and it will be provided with a bottom, the openings through which may receive the articles to hold them in a separated and upright position, fully exposed to the streams of water. The -tray may also have front and ends and also a back is required, although the basket Within which it is supported may serve as the back wall if desired.

lVhile I have illustrated and described herein certain forms of devices these may be altered and changed to a considerable degree and yet embody the invention, which is not limited to the exact. construction herein disclosed.

I claim- 1. A dish washing machine including a tub. a barrel rotatably mounted in the tub, a basket suspended within the barrel, means upon the bottom of the basket and on opposite sides thereof to engage the edges of dishes and hold then spaced apart in an upright position, and means for gathering` water Jfrom within the tub and dashing it in different directions against the front and back faces of the dishes within the basket.

A dish washing machine including a tub, a barrel rotatably mounted Within the tub, a basket suspended withinv the barrel, means for supporting the dishes on edge with their faces toward the ends of the barrel, buckets extending along the inner face of the barrel lengthwise thereof, a part of the bottoms of some of the buckets being inclined each in a ditferent direction lengthwise of the barrel from that of another part thereof and the bottoms in some of the buckets being inclined in different directions from those in some of the other buckets, said buckets having openings through their bot- 'atei' aga inst the tub, a barrel rotatably mounted within the i tub, a basket suspended within the barrel, means within the basket for facing the dishes toward the ends of the barrel, troughs extending along the inner face of the barrel lengthwise thereof at its periphery, the

bottoms of some of said troughs being in cliued at an angle to the axis of the barrel, said bottoms having openings therethrough 'extending in a direction at right angles to the plane of said bottom, and means for rotating the barrel.

7. A dish washing machine including a tub, a barrel rotatably mounted within the tub and having slots extending lengthwise along its outer surface providing openings into its interior. troughs extending along the inner face of the barrel lengthwise thereof at its periphery and into which said slots open` the bottoms ol' some of said troughs being inclined at an angle to the axis o. tnf` barrel. and said bottoms havingopenings theretln'ough, a basket suspended within the barrel. and means within the basket. yt'or facing the dishes toward th(` ends ofthe barrel.
