` To all lwhom t may/ concern lie it known that I, GEORGE A. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Magazine-Firearms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
rlhis inventionhas reference to improvements in rifles and similar fire-arms having magazines or containers for a plurality of cartridges or ammunition elements. n
One object of the invention is to provide a rifle or other fire-arm having a magazine or container for vammunition with indicating means to indicate the amount of ammunition remaining in said magazine.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved indicator for magazines of fire-arms.
' Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.
The invention consists in the novel combination of the indicating mechanism with the magazine. The invention also consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claim. f

of the magazine relative to its forward guard and, in Fig. 10, the sliding forward of the magazineA relative to the forward guard which guard is received by the slots in the magazine. Fig. 11, represents a more complete view of the parts with the magazine slid forward so that its rear end, or the end of its follower', will not interfere with the rotative movement of the barrel to engage or disengage the barrel with a. holding member. Fig. 12, represents a detail view of a part of the magazine follower and the swivel device to which the shock absorbing spring of the indicator tape is secured.

As shown in the drawings, in its preferred form. the invention is shown as applied to the rifle barrel 15 of well known construction having the butt 16 of the bayonet joint variety adapted to be engaged to a member of the usual rifle frame by a rotative movement of the barrel.
Carried by the rifle barrelfl is the front guard or member 17 and the rear guard or member 18 which sustain the tubular niagazine 19 in place. rlhe rear guard 18 is perforated to slidably and rotatably receive the butt end of the magazine 19 which is furnished at its butt end with the bayonet joint members 20, 2O and, at its forward end, has the slots 21 and 22 whereby when said magazine 19 is rotated to bring slot 22 into registry with guard 17 said magazine may be moved lengthwise from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 11.
lVithin the forward end of the magazine is the collar 23 having the slot 24, in registry with slot 22 of the magazine 19, the guide 25, and the ears 26, 2G between which latter is pivotally received La member of the latch plate 27 which plate has a slot adapted to receive the front guard 17 to prevent the rotative movement of said magazine while said plate 27 is held in the locked position by the engagement of its spring pressed pin 28 with one of the ears 26, 26. Collar 23 has the pin 29 which cooperates with the bayonet joint member 30 of forward guard 17 normally to prevent the forward lengthwise movement of the magazine 19, see Fig. 7.
Slidably mounted v Yithin the forward portion of the magazine 19 is the frame 31 having the opening 32, in registry with slot 21 member 33, adapted normally to close slot 22 of said magazine, and the heads 34 and 35 ofwhich head 34 is perforated tol slidably receive guide 25, whereby 4rot'ation of frame 31 is' prevented. This frame 31 is yieldingly sustained by the usual follower or cartridge forcing spring 36 having the follower 37 which spring and follower operate to move cartridges along said magazine as in the usual and well known manner. lV hen no cartridge is present to restrain follower 37 said follower projects from the butt end of magazine 19 as shown in Fig. 1.
Mounted on a suitable member attached to the heads 341, 35 of frame 31 is the rotatable tape reel 38 constantly under retractive strain of its spring 39 and carrying the tape `10 which tape extends through the coils of the follower spring 36 and has the shock absorbing spring 41, attached, by means of the swivel Ll2, to the follower 37, as indicated in Fig. 12 or t0 some member having a degree of movement equivalent to or having relation to the movement of said follower in followingV theexpulsion of` ammunition from the magazine. Tape 40 has any series or systemv of characters which by their appearance at a particular point herein defined by opening 32 of casing 31, are indicative of the amount of ammunition re maining in the magazine.
The operation of this invention will be understood by A.reference to the drawings. Cartridges or other ammunition elements are introduced into the open butt 'end of the magazine 19 in the usual manner and force inward the follower 37 against the action of spring 36 and at the same time moving the swivel member 42 toward the front end of the magazineand permitting the spring 39 to retractively rotate reel 38 to take up the indicator tape or device 40 a distance equal to the space occupied by the ammunition elements in the length of the magazine. Such take-up movement will be indicated by the appearance of the indicating characters of said tape 40 at the opening of the frame 31 whereby when the magazine 19 is filled'with ammunition elements the character on tape 4() indicating the greatestlnumber will appear to View at said opening It is to be noted that atlall positions of the follower 37 the tape 4,() is sustained under tension between said follower and the reel 38 as a result of the arrangement of the springs 36, 39 and 41 and their cooperating parts whereby shocks to said tape 40 are avoided while sudden movements of the follower 37 are reduced in intensity before said shocks reach th tape by the shock absorbing spring 42.
lVhen it is desired to remove the barrel 15 and its magazine 19 from the usual stock the latch 28 is released from its engagement with one of the shoulders 26, 26 and the latch plate 27 is swung outward from its engagement with the forward guard 17 to the position shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 8 at which position it may be utilized as a lever to assist in effecting rotative movement of the magazine 19 until its slot 22 is brought into registry with the guard 17, as is shown in Fig. 9, in which position the magazine may be moved lengthwise, slot 22 receiving the guard 17 and said guard bearing against and forcing member 23 and its frame 31 along the magazine 19 against the resistance of follower spring 36 after which the magazine 19 will be in position asshown in Fig. 11 relative tothe barrel 15 and its guard 18. Barrel 15 may be released from the ordinary bayonet joint connection with its stock by giving the barrel a one quarter rotation and withdrawing it. In replacing the barrel and its magazine 19 on the stock such operation is reversed.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
A fire-arm of the nature described comprising a barrel, a magazine, a follower in said magazine, a spring for actuating said follower, and an indicating device contained within said magazine and having a take up frame sustained by said spring and an 1ndicating member attached to said follower.
