BAGGAGE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters late nt.
Patented Oct. 21, 1916.
Application filed January 17, 1916. Serial No. 72,549.
Z '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST YITT, a citizen of the I'nited States, residing at \Vashington, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baggage-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in baggage holders, andit is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be readily collapsed when not in use in order to occupy a mini-mum of space.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby it will be effectively maintained in extended or operative adjustment.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved baggage holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a baggage holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. '2 is a transverse sectional view; and Fig. 3
is a transverse sectional view taken throughv my improved device when in a folded or compacted adjustment.
My improved baggage holder,*as-herein disclosed, is primarily intended for use in connection with an automobile and is adapted to be supported on a foot-board thereof, but as I do not desire to be limited to this particular arrangement I have therefore not illustrated my invention in an applied position. It will also be understood that my holder may be of any dimensions desired and may be produced of any suitable material and finished. in any manner which best suits the user.
As herein disclosed, 1 denotes the bottom panel of my improved holder herein disof a height materially in excess of the height of the remaining vertical panels, as 1s clearly illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings. 9 denotes the front panel of my improved,
holder provided with the depending ears 10 returned to ait'ord the barrels 11 through which the forward longitudinal pintle at is directed. The barrels 3 at each end of the bottom panel 1 have disposed therethrough the pintle 12 also disposed through the barrels 14 carried by the lower marginal por tion of the intermediate end panel 15. The intermediate panel 15 is triangular in form with its apex extended upwardly and has formed along its side margins the barrels 16 through which are extended the pintles 17 also disposed through the barrels 18 formed along the adjacent margins of the outer end panels 19, herein disclosed as of right triangular formation, with their base margins provided with the barrels 20 through which are disposed the pintles 8, one of said pintles being directed through the barrels 7, hereinbefore referred to, while the second pintle is disposed through the barrels 21 formed at the end margins of the front panel 9.
In View of the foregoing arrangement of parts, it will be perceived that as the back panel 5 is forced downwardly, the :end panels 15 and 19-together with the front panel 9 will swing inwardly below the back panel 5 whereby the holder, when not in use, can be collapsed or compacted in order to occupy a minimum of space.
Inorder to assure the holder maintaining an open or operative adjustment, I pivotally engage with the inner face of the bottom panel 1 the U-shaped brackets 22 of a width substantially equal to the width of the bottom panel 1 and which serve, as is particularly shown in Fig. 1, to prevent my improved holder from collapsing.
In order to maintain my improved device in a foldedor compacted adjustment, I provide the free longitudinal marginal portion of the bottom panel 1 with the upstanding spring catches 23 adapted to coact 'with the rear panel 5 as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. It is to be observed that the rear panel 5 is of a transverse width slightly in excess of the transverse width of the bottom panel 1 and that the free longitudinal margin of the rear panel 5 is disposed on a slight incline, and in order that the requisite engagement of the hooks 23 with the rear panel 5 may be had, I provide the marginal portion with the recesses 24: as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be. obvious that a baggage holder constructed in accordance'with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled. and it willalso be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification withoutmaterial departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be un derstood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
1. A holder of the character described comprising a bottom panel, side panels hinged thereto 'and adapted to fold thereupon. end panels, saidend panels comprising an intermediate section of triangular formation hinged to the ends of the bottom panel, end sections of righttriangular formation pivotally engaged with the side margins of the intermediate section and to the end margins of the front and back panels, and members pivotally engaged with the inner face of the bottom panel at points inwardly of the end panels and coacting with the remaining panels for preventing the device from collapsing when distended.
2. A holder of the character described comprising a bottom panel, side panels hinged thereto and adapted to fold thereupon. end panels, said end panels comprising an intermediate section of triangular formation hinged to the ends of the bottom panel, end sections of right triangular formation pivotally engaged with the side margins of the intermediate section and to the end margins-of the front and back panels, and U-shape brackets pivotally engaged with the inner face of the bottom panel and coacting with the remaining panels for pre- 7 venting the device collapsing when distended.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. 1 AUGUST VITTL.
Witnesses: 3
