To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY ED. PHILIPS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Retaining- Springs for Advertising-Cards in Street- Cars, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to retaining springs for advertising cards in street cars.

The object of my invention is to produce a spring adapted to secure advertising cards in the longitudinal frames on the sides of street cars.

Another object thereof is to produce an extensible end portion for such springs by which their length may be .adjusted to compensate for any irregularities in the distance between the longitudinal frames.

A further object thereof is to produce a retaining spring of said character having an extensible clip or collar at its ends adapted to be adjusted longitudinally on the body portionof the spring, and being provided with a shoulder for bearing against the edge of the frame, and having spurs or points on the opposite or inner face adapted to impinge or engage the faces of the adjacent advertising cards to hold same in position.

A further object thereof is to produce a slidable collar having a projecting tongue adapted to be inserted under the inner end of the extensible end piece to hold same in adjusted position, and a still further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and efficient retaining spring of the character described than has heretofore been attained.

To these ends, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a front view of my invention in use; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspec tive view of my retaining spring detached from a frame. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the adjustable head in looking position.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the side walls of a street car, at the curve toward the roof, and 2 and'3 designate the upper and lower strips of molding, respectively, that form the frame for holding a plurality of advertising cards at. As shown, the upper and lower edges of such cards are carried in the grooves 5 and 6 between'the strips 2 and 3 and the face of the wall 1 of the car, while the .adjacent vertical edges are usually secured and covered by a strip of spring metal also secured at its opposite ends in the grooves 5 and 6. Such retaining springs, owing to the rocking and vibration of cars and to the possible irregularities in the construction of the card frames, are inclined to slip from position, assume a diagonal position or fall entirely from place.

For the purpose of obviating such conditions, I provide a retaining spring comprising the body portion 7 of curved spring metal or other suitable material of substantially sufficient length to extend from the groove 5 to the groove 6, and of the preferred width, on either or both ends of which is carried a longitudinally adjustable head 8. Said head comprises the collar portion 9, bent around the body portion 7 of the spring, .and the longitudinal projection 10. On the front face of said portion and offset from its end is provided a shoulder 11 adapted to bridge any gap that may exist between the molding strip 2 or 3 and the Wall of the car, while on the opposite face or back thereof are provided the spurs 12 and 13 spaced apart transversely of the spring adapted to engage and fasten themselves into the faces of the adjacent cards to prevent the spring and cards from walking. As shown in the drawings, said spurs may be formed of the upturned corners of the collar portions 9. i

For the purpose of holding or securing the adjustable head 8 in preferred position,

I provide a slidable collar 14 carried on the spring 7, on the outer end of which is formed a projecting tongue 15 adapted to project beneath the inner end of the collar portion 9 and lock same against movement. On the inner end, as shown, is provided the projecting lug 16 by which the locking collar may be moved longitudinally to lock or release the head in position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is- V 1. A retaining spring for card frames, comprising a body portion, a longitudinally adjustable sleeve on an end thereof, and means for holding said sleeve in fixed position.

2. In a retaining spring for card frames, the combination With a body portion, of a collar slidably carried thereon, a longitudinal projection on said collar, and projections on the back of the collar adapted to engage and fasten into the faces of cards, substantially as suggested.

3. In a retaining spring for card frames, the combination With a body portion, of a collar slidably carried thereon, a longitudinal extension on said collar, and a shoulder on the collar offset from its outer end, substantially as described.

4. In a retaining spring for card frames, the combination with a body portion, of a collar slidably carried thereon, a longitudinal extension on the collar, a second collar slidably carried on said body portion having a longitudinally extending tongue adapted to be inserted between the firstmentioned collar and the body portion of the spring to lock said parts in adjusted position, substantially .as described.

5. In a retaining spring for card frames, the combination of a collar slidably carried thereon, a longitudinal extension on said collar, a shoulder on the collar offset from its end, projections on the back of the collar, a second collar slidably carried on said body portion having .a longitudinally extending tongue adapted to be inserted between the first-mentioned collar and the body portion of the spring to lock said parts in adjusted position.
