Description
S. HARBECK.
DRINKING CUP.
APPLlcAnoN FILED Dc.27. |913.
STANLEY HARBECK, 0F TOLED'O, OHIO.
DRINKING-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1916.
Application led December 27, 1913. Serial No. 809,098.
To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, STANLEY HARBECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Cups, of which the following in a specification.
rIhe object of this invention is to provide an improved sanitary drinking cup which is adapted to be disposed in compact form,
so as to occupy a greatly reduced space with respect to drinking cups of 'this character now in use, and which is adapted when used to be expanded so as to receive water, the cup being in an initially folded and substantially flat condition.
A special feature of the invention consists in connecting the cups in the form of an original package or pack with all of the cups in a flat folded position and their open ends connected so as to form the cups into a pack constituting an original package.
A further feature consists in weakening or perforating each cup on a line near its initially closed open-end so that single cups can be torn off for use when desired.
A further feature consists in uniting the cups into a pack by means serving to close the open ends of the cups so that from the time of intitial assembling until the cups are severed for use, the open ends of the same will be closed thereby preventing entrance thereto of dirt, germs or any foreign matter and rendering the cups perfectly sanitary.
Other features and objects of the invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and will be more particularly pointed out and ascertained in and by the appended claims.
In the drawings :-Figure l is an edge view of a pack of cups embodying my invention. Fig. Q is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a cup that has just been torn off and showing the same in a fiat, folded condition. Fig. l: is a sectional View of one of the torn off cups showing the same distended or expanded to receive water.
Like characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the different figures of the drawing.
As illustrated, each cup may be formed of a blank of paper which is adapted to be folded at the sides, as indicated at l to form cup walls 2 and 3, the margins being overlapped, as indicated at 4 and securedr in any desired manner. The blank is formed with a flap 5 which is adapted to be folded over thewall 3 and secured thereto so as to form a container or cup having an open top.
I desire it to be understood that the specific form of the cup is not essential except in so far as it is capable of being collapsed or folded into a flat condition.
Near the open ends 6 I weaken or perforate the cups on lines indicated at 7 so that single cups can be removed from the pack. Incidentally the edge thus provided reduces the possibility of cutting the mouth of the user of the cup while drinking. Above the perforated or weakening line 7 and below the open tops 6, I unite the cups by means which may comprise upset studs S of a character adapted to not only unite the several cups to form a pack, but also, to close the open ends of the cups.
The pack shown in Figs. 1 and 2 constitutes an original package as it would be delivered from the maker to the retailer or to the place of use.
Users will grasp the free ends or bottoms of the united cups and tear them off on the lines 7, one by one, as desired.
It will thus be seen that the cups are originally united so as to close their open ends and prevent entrance into the cups of any dirt or foreign matter thereby rendering the cups perfectly hygienic and sanitary from the time that they are made and assembled into a pack until they are torn olf therefrom for use.
While I have herein shown and described one specific form of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may import.
I claim:-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a drinking cup formed from a blank foldable into a flat position and provided with an open top and a plurality of perforations extending across said cup adjacent the open top for facilitating the severing of the cup at this point and for providing an edge on the mouth of the cup for reducing the possibility of cutting the mouth of the user while drinking.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a drinking cup formed from a blank of paper including a rectangular body, rectangular side and bottom flaps extending therefrom, one of said side flaps being foldable and engageable upon the other of said side flaps,
said bottom flap being foldable and engagepossibility of cutting the mouth of the user l0 able upon said side flaps at one end of the of the cup While drinking.
cup formed, the opposite end of said cup be- In testimony whereof I affix my signature ing open and provided with a plurality of in presence of two Witnesses.
i' openings adjacent the open end for facilitat- STANLEY HARBECK ing the securing of a plurality of cups and further provided with a line of perforations Witnesses:
adjacent the openings for facilitating the E. F. GRUENDYKE, severing of the cup and for reducing the RALPH C. GERTZ.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents Washington, D. C.
