ANKLE-BRACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1916.
Application led November 15, 1915. Serial No. 61,464.
Y 10 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GUsrAvn Knmenn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ankle Braces, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to an ankle brace or corset of the kind which is inserted into the back of a childs shoe, in order to sustain the ankle. The construction of the brace is such that any objectionable pressure of the stays forming part of the brace, against the foot of the wearer is effectively prevented.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side view partly in section of a shoe provided with a brace embodyingmy invention; Fig. 2 an outer .view of the brace; Fig. 3 a longitudinal section on line 3 3 Fig. 2 with the stay omitted, and Fig. l a transverse section on line 4 4 Fig. 2.
The brace is formed of an inner layer 1, an intermediate layer 2, and an outer layer 3, all cut to the same shape, which adapts it `to be placed against the back of a shoe 4f. As
shown, the configuration of the brace is such that it has a pair of lower lateral iaps 5, and a pair of upper converging flaps 6, separated by a slit 7.
The inner layer 1 is formed of leather, the central layer 2 is formed of a stiffener such as sized buckram, while the outer layer 3 is formed of canvas or similar' textile material. T he three layers are connected to each other by a number of upright seams 3, and by a lower transverse seam 9. These seams form between the central layer 2 and the outer layer 3, a plurality of upright pockets l0 and a horizontal pocket 11. lNithin these pockets, are housed a number of vertical stays 12 and a single horizontal stay 13 respectively, such stays being made of steel or similar material.
It will be seen that by the construction described, the stift layer 2 is interposed between the stays 12, 13 and the inner leather layer 1, so that in this way, the stays, while reinforcing the entire structure, will not be apt to bulge or buckle the inner layer, which remains entirely smooth. Inasmuch as the stiflener 2 does not only extend over those portions of the inner leather layer that face the stays but also over the portions interlmediate the stays, such stiffener will constitute an equalizing medium, whereby the pressure is uniformly transmitted to the entire contacting surface of the foot. lVhen therefore, the brace is fitted into the shoe, with the layer 1 facing the back of the foot, an even. pressure will be exercised against the ankle while any irritating and injurious,
pressure along the lines of the stays is entirely obviated.
I claim:
l. An ankle brace comprising an inner layer, an outer layer, an intermediate stiiiening layer, pockets formed between the intermediate layer and the outer layer, and stays housed within said pockets, the stiliening layer extending over the inner layer at the stays and also over the portions of the inner layer intermediate the stays whereby the pressure is uniformly transmitted to the entire Contacting surface of the foot.
2. An ankle brace comprising an inner layer of leather, an outer layer of canvas, an intermediate layer of sized buckram, pockets formed between the intermediate layer and the outer layer, and stays housed within said pockets, the layer of sized buckram extending over the inner layer at the stays and also over the portions of the inner layer intermediate the stays whereby the pressure is uniformly transmitted to the entire contacting surface of the foot.
