WILHELM R. WELANDER, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
CUTTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1916.
Application filed April 23, 1915. Serial No. 23,379.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILHELM RWVELAN- DER, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of the city of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cutting devices adapted for fastening to a finger of the user for use in cutting string when tying up plants, or other articles, or for cutting flowers with soft stems.
The object of my invention is the production of a device of this character which will be of simple construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1' is a perspective view of acutting device embodying the invention, the same being shown applied for use, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of ,the outer end portion of the device, Fig. 3 is a section taken on line mw of Fig. 2, Fig. 1 is a section taken on line 3 y of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of another form of the device, and Fig. 6 is a section taken on line z-e of Fig. 5
One form of the device, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a metallic thimble 1 which is adapted, when in use, to fit snugly over the outer end of one of the fingers of the user. Projecting from the outer end of the thimble 1 is a cutting blade 2 of any desired form. At the rearward end of said blade are provided laterally projecting engaging portions 3.
Provided in the end wall of the thimble l are two spaced parallel slits 4:, the portion 5 located between said slits being depressed in order to constitute a socket. The portions 6 at the outer sides of said slits are bent outwardly at an angle, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, for engagement with the laterally projecting portions 3 at the rearward end of the blade 2. In order to permit of insertion of the blade between the flanges 6, the lower ends of the latter are slitted as at 7 it being clear that with this construction the portions 3 of the blade may be readily slid to position between the flanges 6 by moving said portions 3 upwardly. The flanges 6 are resilient so that when the blade is operatlvely positioned relatively to the thimble, said flanges pressing against the portions 3 will force the same inwardly against the portion 5. lVhen the rearward end of the blade is positioned against the portion 5, the upper and lower edges of the rearward end of the blade will engage against the shoulders 5 and thus prevent relative movement thereof. With this arrangement then, it will be seen that, in order to release the blade it is first necessary to tilt the outer end thereof upwardly until the lower edge of the rearward end of the blade is disengaged from the corresponding shoulder 5. lVhen this is done, the blade may be slid downwardly to disengage the portions 3 from the flanges 6. It will thusbe seen that the blade may be readily andeasily attached or detached so as to permit the insertion of any form of blade desired and also in order to permit of ready sharpening of the blade. The outer end of the blade is preferably dulled or rounded in order to prevent injury to the hand when the device is in use, one of the longitudinal edges only of the blade being sharpened.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the rearward end of the thimble 1 is 7 connected with a finger-stall'8 preferably of leather, the rearward end of said fingerstall being bifurcated to form a strap 9 adapted to encircle the wrist. A suitable buckle 1Q is employed to fasten the ends of strap 9.
In the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the thimble 1 is provided at opposite sides with longitudinally extending slits 11 which permit of contraction of the thimble into secure engagement with the finger. Upon the thimble is provided a ring 12 through the medium of which the thimble may be contracted and held in contracted condition about the finger. The contacting surfaces of the thimble and the ring 12 are preferably knurled. or roughened in order to increase the friction so as to insure against slipping of the ring 12 when adjusted to operative position upon the thimble.
Eitherform of fastening of the device to the finger is effective, each being adapted to hold the blade securely in position upon the finger in using the device.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for car rying my invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a thimble adapted for arrangement upon the finger, there being a slot in the outer end of said thimble; a cutting blade arranged in the outer end of said thimble and having its rearward end resting in the slot provided in said thimble; laterally projecting portions at the rearward end of said. blade; and resilient engaging flanges on said thimble overhanging said slot and adapted for engagement with said laterally projecting portions of said blade to crowd the rearward end of said blade down into said slot, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising a thimble adapted for arrangement upon the finger, there being a substantially \i-shaped slot in the outer end of said thimble having resilient sides; a cutting blade arranged in the outer end of said thimble and having its rearward end resting in the slot provided in said thimble; later ally projecting portions at the rearward end of said blade adapted for engagement under said sides of said slot whereby said end of said blade is crowded down into said slot, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
