IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKlNG-BRUSHES AND BOXES COMBINED.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,805, dated September 12, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HUGH S. KERR, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have. invented a Oombined Blacking-Brush and Box, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to that class in which the device for putting the blacking upon the boot is attached to the back of the brush; and the improvement consists in the construction and an rangement of the parts composing this blacking device.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through brush and box. Fig. 2 is a plan of brush, showing the socket attached. A is the polishing-brush as usually made, having a raised circular boss, b, upon which the blacking-box c fits. A nut or socket, n, with a screw cut in it, is also let into this boss, and a pin, (1, is secured to the bottom of the box 0, so that the box may be screwed fast to the socket which is let into the brush. The blacking is indicated by 6. Over the box 0 slides the ring g, which may be termed the sponge-holder. A ring, h, slides inside the ring g, the edge of which may be serrated, and which embeds itself into the sponge N, thereby securing it within the nu g g.

By making the bottom flange of the box 0 all of one limited size the box will be held sufficiently tight upon the boss I) and the screw d may be dispensed with, as shown in Fig. 3. A cap, 70, fits over the sponge, to prevent it from drying and becoming hard and useless. This cap has 011 its wider side a button, m, by which the sponge can be forced against the blacking and be more thoroughly saturated than it would be naturally. The sponge-holder g is reversible, so that either side of the sponge may be used next the blackmg.

When using this brush, remove the cap is and moisten the sponge. The blacking will be absorbed by the sponge, and can be applied to the boot.

What I claim as my invention is l. The combination and arrangement of the brush A, the blacking-box c, the sponge N, and cap k, substantially as herein described.
