GEORGE S. LEMON, OF WALKER, WEST VIRGINIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed October 16, 1915. Serial No. 56,309.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon S. LEMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walker, in the county of food and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and more particularly to that class of wrenches used for joining lengths of pipe of the larger diameter.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a rotatable jaw provided with a plurality of ratchet teeth for use in connection with a wrench lever to enable the jaw to be rotated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of rotary j awfor gripping the end of the pipe to be turned which may be readily placed in position or removed from the pipe and which will effectively grip the same and prevent the pipe from turning with relation thereto.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan View of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side view of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the wrench. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the jaw members, illustrating the gripping jaw, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the movable support for the pivot bar.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base member of the frame of the device provided with the forwardly extending arms 2. These arms are provided at their outer ends with the curved recesses 3, the inner ends of which are offset as at 1 to receive the clamping shoe 5. a This clamping shoe is provided with a serrated jaw face 6 and is pivotally mounted as at 7 on the short end 8 of a lever 9 which is pivoted as at 10 to its respective arm. The long end of the lever extends toward the base 1 and it will be apparent that when the same is moved downwardly in the direction of the arrow as indicated in Fig. 2, the jaw member or shoe will be moved into clamping position.
Extending between the arms 2 at a point spaced outwardly a short distance from the base 1 is the pivot bar 11, which supports the actuating lever designated generally by the numeral 12. This lever 12 comprises the handle portion 13 formed at its lower end with the head 14. and one side of this head is recessed as at 15 at a point above the pivot opening 16, while the opposite side of the head is provided with a recess 17 at a point below the pivot opening 16. This pivot opening 16 receives the pivot bar 11 and forms a center around which the handle 18 swings. Pivotally mounted within the recess 15 is a pawl 18, the outer end of which is bent downwardly as at 19, and this pawl cooperates with the pawl 20 which is mounted in the recess 17 and has its end bent downwardly as at 21. These pawls 18 and 20 are arranged to engage the rotatable jaw member so that upon oscillation of the lever, the same will be turned. In order to limit the downward movement of the pawls, there are provided the flexible members 22, which are connected as at 23 to the pawls and as at 24 to the handle .13. It will thus be seen that upon movement of the handle, beyond a predetermined point, the pawls may be lifted so as to disengage the ratchet teeth of the aw.
The aw above referred to consists of the semicircular jaw members 25 and 26, each of whichis formed with a plurality of peripheral ratchet teeth 27 and a central angular flange 28, which is adapted to hold the pawls in place on the jaw members. These jaw members are connected together at one end by a suitable link. 29 and the opposite ends are connected by the hooks 30,.one of which is provided with the thumb piece 81.
A recess 32 is formed in the jaw member 26 and mounted in said recess is the shoe 33,
provided with a serrated jaw face 34 which 3 8 which is pivoted to the pivot 35 and the opposite end of said link is pivoted as at 39 to the lever 40 which. in turn is pivoted as at 41 to the jaw member 26. It will thus be seen that upon movement of the lever, the
shoe 33 may be made to engage or disengage the pipe according to the direction of movement. position for opening, there'is provided a plurality of lugs or pins 42, which extend outwardly from one side of the jaw and Whichsure is brought on the lever 14, there is provided the movable support designated generally by the'numeral 45 consisting of the body 46, provided at one end with the opening 47 for the reception of the pivot bar 11 and the opposite end is provided with the.
' handle member 48 which forms at the point where it joins the body 46, a shoulder 49 for engagementwith the base 1.
be seen that when the shoulder 49 engages the base 1, the bar 11 cannot be moved inwardly toward said base regardless of the amount of strain thereon and thus any springing of the bar will be eliminated.
It will be apparentfrom the foregoing that in use, the devicejis assembled as illus-- tratedin 'Figs. 1, 2,, and 3 and upon oscillation of the lever-13, the jaw will be revolved, thus turning the length of pipe which is held therein and threading the same into the socket of the pipe to which itis to be joined, the last named pipe being held stationary by one of the shoes 5 by'the manual manipulation of the lever supporting the same. It will be understood that only one of the jaws 5 is clamped at a time thereby allowing the pipe to freely rotate in the opposite jaw. In this way, it willbe seen that pipes of large diameters may be readily connected and the necessity of providing extra large wrenches is eliminated. 5
While in the foregoing, there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is tobe understood that such changes'may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will pended claims. 7
What is claimed is z 7 v 1. A wrench ofthe class described comfall within the spirit and scope of the apcopiel of th t: patent may be obtained tor In order to hold the jaw in proper It will thus prising a U-shaped frame, jaws the ends of the arms of the frame, a rotatable jaw adapted to surround the pipes being connected, said pipes being held in the jaws in the arms of the frame and means to rotate said rotatable jaw.
2. In a pipe wrench, a U-shaped frame, jaws at the ends of the arms of the frame adapted to support the pipes tobe connected, a rotatable jaw surrounding said pipe, a plurality of ratchet teeth on the periphery of the rotatable jaw, a lever pivoted .on the frame and pawls carried by the lever for engagement with the ratchetteeth on the rotatable aw whereby upon oscillation of the lever the aw will be rotated.
3. In a pipe wrench'of the character described a U -shaped frame, jaw members supported at the outer ends of the arms of the frame, said jaw members being adapted to hold the pipes which are to be connected, a rotatable jaw member adapted to be clamped around one of said pipes, ratchet teeth on the periphery of the rotatable jaw, a lever pivoted to the frame, pawls pivoted to the lever and adapted to form a means for rotating the rotatable aw and. a pipe gripping shoe within the rotatable jaw for engaging the pipes and preventing the same from turning with relation to the rotatable aw. V r
4:. In a pipe wrench, a U-shaped frame, the arms of said frame being provided with recesses near their outer ends, the recesses being adapted to receive the pipes which are ing a recess in one of its sections, a shoe slidable in said recess and adapted to grip the pipe upon which the device is used to prevent the pipe from turning with relation to thefjaw, a lever pivoted in the frame,
pawls pivoted to the lever and adapted to i engage the ratchet teeth to rotate the jaw member upon oscillation of the lever, and means to prevent the pawls from moving beyond a predetermined distance.
In testimony whereof'I affix my signature in presence of tWO'WltIlGSSQS.
