IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-SHOVELS.

Speeiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,756, dated August 8, 1871; antedatcd July 25, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. FARMER7 of the city of Detroit, county of NVayne and State of Michigan, have invented and constructed a new form of Goal-aving Shovel, the bottom of which consists of a combination of parallel bars running lengthwise of the shovel, With a central strengthening cross-bar at right angles to and connected with said parallel bars and With the rim at the edge. Said parallel bars are separated by slots one-quarter of an inch in width, but may be of varyin g Width, and are connected with the rim of' the shovel at the back direct, and at the front by means of a retaining cross-bar. The surface of the slots between the bars is intended to nearly equal in extent that of the parallel bars.

Said shovel maybe used in connection with any coal-burning stove, grate, or furnace, for the purpose of readily saving the coke and coal that has fallen through or been dumped from the grate,

removing it nd separating it from the ashes by one and the saine operation, thus putting the coal in condition for immediate or subsequent use, and thereby avoiding the necessity of twice handling and sifting in order to produce the saine result.

I claim- The construction of a small shovel, having for its bottoni a combination of parallel bars, with intervening slots, and a central strengthening cross-bar, and also a retaining cross-bar at the front, the shovel to be Ina-de either of cast or pressed iron, or other metal, and to be used, in connection with the burning of coal, for the purpose of easily and covenientl y savin g the coal and coke, in the manner substantially as described.
