FOLDING CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent. ?atented Mar. 28, 1916.
Application filed January 7, 1915. Serial No. 1,037.
ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. LOVELEss,
av citizen of the United States of America, residing at lVarren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same. 1
This invention relates to improvements in folding chairs, and one object of this invention is to produce a folding-chair construction the component parts whereof can be assembled with facility and when assembled are not liable to become displaced.
Another object is to construct'a folding chair which is strongand durable and can be stored in a small space when in a collapsed or folded condition.
With these objects in view, this invention consists in certain structuralfeatures and combinations of parts hereinafter described in this specification, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings-Figure 1 is a side view, in central verticalsection', of afolding chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view, in central vertical section, showing said chair in a collapsed or folded condition. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of a folding chair embodying my invention. Fig. 4- is a transverse section in detail, the section being taken along the line 4.-4, Fig. 1, through the'leg-forming lower portion of oneof the outer side pieces of the chair. Portions are broken away in Figs. 2 and 3 to more clearly show the construction.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, my improved folding chair comprises a pair of laterally spaced rearwardly inclined upright wooden outer side pieces A which have the lower portions thereof forming the forwardly extending legs of the chair and their upper portions participating in the formation of the back of the chair. V
A pair of laterally spaced rearwardly extending wooden legs B are arranged between and cross the lower leg-forming portions of the side pieces A.
A horizontally arranged seat U rests on the upper ends of the legs B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and extends between the outer side pieces A and is pivoted to said side p1eces,'as at 5, horizontally and tran versely of the chair. The seat C is provided, at its under side (see Figs. 1 and 3) with metal plates 6 arranged next forward of the upper ends of said legs.
The upper portions of the side pieces A are connected together by cross-bars 7 which participate in the formation of the back of the chair and the leg-forming lower portions of said side pieces are tied together near their lower ends by a cross-bar 8. The rearwardly extending legs B are tied together by cross-bars 10.
A horizontally arranged pivotal rod D,
which is parallel with the axis of the seat C, extends, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, through the rearwardly extending legs B where said legs cross the leg-forming lower portions of the outer side pieces A and extends through said portions of said outer side pieces, and a spacing collar E is loosely mounted on said rod between the leg-form ing lower portionof each side piece A and the adjacent leg B. It will be observed therefore that the rearwardly extending legs B are not only arranged between the legforming lower portions of the outer side pieces A but spaced from said side pieces,
forming lower portion of the adjacent outer side piece A horizontally and transversely of the chair. 7 a j A wrought metal link G is instrumental in connecting each rearwardly extending leg B with the leg-forming lower portion of the adjacent outer side piece A and is arranged below the rod D, and said portion of said outer side piece is provided, a suitable distance below said rod but above the crossbar 8, with a slot which is arranged longitudinally of said side piece and extends, as at 12, from the rear edge or surface of said side piece forwardly to a point substantially central between said edge or surface and the forward edge or surface of said side piece and extends from said point, asat'13, laterally and inwardly to the inner side of said side piece.
zontally and transversely of the chairf- Each link G also extends along theinner side of the adjacent outer side piece A and (see Figs.
1, 3 and 4) terminates at said sidevpie ce'in a laterally and outwardly extending arm 15 which P j s at the'upper end of thefoi -f ward portion 13 of the slot in said side piece from the'inner side of said side piece into sa1d portlon of sa1d slot and'has'lts "outer" end-portion 16 projecting within the rear rior side of said side piece.
Fig. 2 shows my improved foldingfchairi in acollapsed'or folded condition, and it will be observed that in the relative positionof the parts of the folded chair the link-arms l5 and their rearwardly projecting members 16 are at the lower ends of the slots injthe leg-forming lower portions of the outersi'de pieces A.
By the construction hereinbefore described it will be observed that the componentparts of my improved folding chair can be assembled with facility; that the spacing of the rearwardly extending legs-B through themedium of thecollars E'from the outer side pieces A is important to per mit the arrangement of said links relative to the connecting-parts as hereinbefore described ,that the room takenupby the chair in the collapsed or folded condition of the chair f is reduced to'a minimum; that the parts when assembled are not liable to become disconnected, and that the construc" 'tlon is simple, strong and durable.-
What I claim is:--
1. In a folding chair, the combination; with two crossed legs pivotally connected together,-one leg being provided with a slot which is arranged longitudinally of the leg-'- portion thereof extending to a Point substant a y tral .b e th rea and forward edges or "si'irfacedof -the leg fronionebf said edges or surfaces and also has portion extending from said point to'one" side of the leg, of a link pivotally connected atone end to the other legand extendingbetween the legs and terminatingat its opposite end in an arm' which projects at the upper end of the aforesaid slot into the second-mentioned*portio'n of the slbtahd wardly extending'leg spaced from and crossingithe first mentiQned leg; said legs being V pivotally connected together, theforw'ardly L V extendingleg being "provided with a slot" arranged longitudinally of said leg, which slot has its rear portion extending fo'r wardlyfr'om the rear edge or surface of said forwardly extending leg and has its forward portion extending to the inner side" of said leg, of a link extending betweenthe' legs and along-the outer side of" and pivotally con-z V nected 'to' the aforesaid rearwardly extending leg, said"linkalsoextending along the innerside" of" the aforesaid forwardly "extending leg and there terminatingin an arm which projects at the upper end of the afore said slot into said slot from said'side ofpsaid forwardly extending leg and has its outer end-portion projecting within the rear por-V tion of'said slot rearwardly beyond theaforesaid forward portion of the slot.
In testimo-ny whereof;I 5 gm nesses.
