Description

PATENT FFCE.
HENRY (l. B'UHOUP, 0F PlflflSlUllG, PENNSYLVANlA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE TALLYlNG-REGISTERS.
Speeilieation forming part ol' Letters Patent No. 116,550, dated .luly 4, 187i.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. Yuno'ur, ot' Pittsburg, .in the eounty ot Allegheny and State 0i' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful flinprovelnents in Portable Alarm-Registers; and that the following is a tnll, clear, and exaet description ot' the same, reterence being had to the ae iompanying drawing making a part ot' this specitleation, in whieh- Figure l represents in perspective an exterior view of the register with a portion ot' the ease represented as broken a vay to show parts un derneath it. Fig. 2 represents a seetionthrough the register', so taken as to show the gearing in full. Fig. 3 represents a-vertieal transverse seetion taken through the register and case.
Similar letters oi' ret'erenee where they occur in the separate 'figures denote like parts ot' the apparatus in the drawing.
My invention relates to an especial arrangement of gears inside otl a ease, which ean be operated from the exterior both to keep the register and sound the alarm, and also to reset the register when it beeomes necessary to do so.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proeeed to describe the saine with reference to the drawin The train of gears for operating the alarm and registering mechanism is arranged and supported in a trame, A, whieh is inelosed within a ease, B, that has a portion of it hinged or removable to gain aeeess to the interior, and on the ease there are loops a (t, through which a strap or straps maybe passed to attaeh the apparatus to the person using it. Centrally placed in the apiaratus there is a shalt, o, to the end ol' which a button or knob, D, is fastened, by whieh said shaft may be turned from the exterior otl the ease, and around this shaft there is coiled a spring, b, one Aend of whioh bears against the stud c, Fig. 2, and the other end against thel tappet d, so that when the shat't G is turned partially around it will compress said spring, and when let go the spring will ret-urn the shatt to its normal position. rllhe tappet d, when the shaft A is turned, engages with the pivoted switch or paw] e on the end of the lever j", which lever is at taehed to a shaft, g, that has upon it the hainnier h for striking the bell l). A spring, fi, bears against the shaft of the bell-hammer to throw thehannner against the bell. The pawl or switeh e is pivoted so that after the bell is struek and the shatt A released said pivoted portion may yield when it passes the tappet in returning. There is also another tappet, j, on the shatt A, which, when the shaft is turned, takes against the ratchet-'wheel 7.' and turns said wheel, and is pivoted so that when the shatt eomes back, by action ot its spring, this tappet or pa wl may yield on its pivot and be restored to its working position by a spring, l, bearing against it. From this ratchet-wheel l; the train ot' gears lm n is driven by pinions 2 3 et 5, and the indicators o are moved over the dials p to keep the register ot' the blows upon the bell7 each ot' which indicates an operation ot the apparatus. The dials indicate by units, tens, hundreds, tvc., in the ordinary \\'ellknown way, and need not be described in detail. Within the. ease ll, and projecting trom the trame A, in whieh latter it is supported, there is a shat't haying a earn-prolootion, r, upon it, which proieetion takes under the spring-parti s that engages with the ratehetwheel lf, to prevent any backlash in said wheel. rlhe end t ol" this shaltis squared to torni a stem, upon whieh a key, u, held in the trame, may be placed, and turned to throw and hold the springpawl s out otits engagement with the ratchetwheel, then, shitting the key u onto the squared end 'o ot the shat't that carries the ratchet-wheel and pinion 2, the t 'ain o1'l gears maybe run by the key with great rapidity to reset the indicators on. the dials.
Having thus iully deseribed my invention, wh at I claim therein as new, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a central shaft, (l, that is turned by a knob, l), returned by a spring, I), a hinged tappet, j, tor turnin the ratohet-wheel L', and a lixed tappet, d, `for eausing a bell to be struek through a hinged switeh, e, when the parts are arranged to operate z e and tor the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the ratehetwheel and its shatt, and a spring-pawl, s, engaging therein, a cam-shaft, the protruding ends u il ot' whieh shafts are squared to reeeive a key, by which the springpawl may be disengaged and held out ot' aetion, and the ratehet-wheel run to reset the ind' :ators upon the dials, as described and represented.
