Description
PATENT FFIGE.
ROBERT R. BALL, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,009, dated J une 20, 1871.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. BALL, of West Meriden', in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Lock and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the acco'mpanyin g drawing forming part of this sp ecification.
My invention relates to sash-holders, and consists in certain improvements thereon, which will be first described in 'connection with'all that is necessary to their full understanding and then clearly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of a sash-lock constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view, showin g the face of the lock.. Fig. 3 represents a side view with the cap-plate 01f, showin g the interior or general construction of the lock.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
,A is thecase, which'is made of metal, with an opening in its face through whichthe tumbler and guard work, and also with a slot through which a detached lever may work for operating the lock in the absence of the lockkey. B is the tumbler, by means of which the sashes of a window may be held up. This tumbler is operated by a key inserted in its socket C. In this example of my invention a spiral spring, D, forces the tumbler in one direction or outward. E is a recess or slot in the end of the socket C, by means of which the tumbler may be operated without the truekey, as indicated in the drawing. F is the guard, which is connected with or attached to the tum bler B by means of grooves G in the sides of the tumbler, and pins or projections on the inner sides of the lugs H of the guard, or in any other manner, so that the guard may play freely and have a motion independent of the tumbler. This guard is for the purpose of holding the lower sash down, and also for preventing the tumbler from being raised or tampered with when the lock is applied to the upper sash of the window. The small shoulders I I on the 4 front of the case prevent the guard from raising above a certain' point. The guard thus forms an effectual stop to any instrument which might be inserted for raising the tumbler. For fastening down the lower sash the connection of the guard with the tumbler is such that the guard has a motion independent of the tumbler, any slight abrasion onthe edge of the sash beingsufficient to engage the edge of the guard,
which forms a perfect lock t'oprevent the raising of the sash. J is the lever, which may be used for operating the lock. The true key K is seen, in dotted lines, constructed with a square shank to enter the socket C when placed in the position occupied by J.
Having thus described myin vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a sash-lock, the guard F or its equivalent, in combination with a pivoted tumbler, so as to operate substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
2. In combination with the socket or keyhole of a sash-lock, the slot or recess E, substantially as and for the purposes described. 3. In a sash-lock, the combination of the guard F, and the shoulders I I in the lock-case and lid for limiting or stopping the guard, substantially as shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 11th day of November, 1870.
i Witnesses: ROBERT It. BALL. GEO. W. MABEE,
T. B. Mosnnn.
