METALLIC BASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1915.
" Application filed July 18, 1914. Serial No. 851,777.
To all whom it may concern.
' Be it known that I, ELLIs A. RIsHnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at ONeill, in the county of Holt and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Baskets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing s.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in baskets, and particularly to baskets which are adapted for use by grocers and other dealers in the delivery of purchases'to customers.
An object of this invention is the provisionof a metallic basket, the body portion of which is constructed of one sheet of material, so that the same will be adapted to withstand rough handling to which. baskets of this character are usually subjected.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a delivery basket, which is provided with a hinged partition, the partition being adapted for folding against the bottom of the basket, so that the basket may be used to deliver one large order, or the partition may be disposed vertically to divide the basket into two compartments, in.
which two small orders mav be placed, the partition serving to keep the orders separate from each other.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1'; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fi Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body of the basket which is formed. from'a single sheet of metal such as galvanized iron or the like, the sides and ends'of the basket being flared upwardly and outwardly, the ends of the side walls and the ends of the end walls being overlapped as at 2, and being secured together by rivets or other suitable fastening devices. The upper edges of the sides and ends are rolled or beaded as at 3 around a strengthening rod 4, and formed in the end walls of the basket are hand openings 5, which are formed by punching a portion of the metal at each end .out- Wardly, and rolling the same upwardly as at 6'to the upper edge of the opening, the rolled portion of the metal forming an en larged smooth surface for the hand. The bottom of the basket is provided with a lurality of perforations 7, through w rich liquid contained within the basket may escape, and to brace the bottom and the ends of the basket, metallic brace bars 8 extend along the under face of the bottom, the ends of the bars being disposed upwardly along the ends of the basket and secured thereto on the opposite sides of the hand openings 5.
Rotatably mounted at its opposite ends in the side walls intermediate of the ends of the basket, is a shaft 9, and secured to the shaft by rolling one edge thereof around the same is a partition plate 10, the rolled edge of the partition being soldered or otherwise secured to the shaft, and the rolled edge thereof frictionally engaging the flat bottom of the basket, so that when the partition is disposed in vertical position to divide the basket into two compartments, the partition will be maintained against accidental displacement by the frictional engagement of its rolled edge with the bottom. The partition 10 is of a length substantially the same as the height of the basket, so thatwhen the partition is arranged vertically, the upper edge thereof is disposed substantially flush with the upper edge of the basket, and the basket is divided 'into two small compartments to receive two small orders for delivery to different customers, the partition preventing the orders from becoming mixed. It Wlll be readily seen that when the basket is desired for use to deliver one large order, the partition may be easily swung downwardly against the bottom of the basket toward either end thereof, so that the body of the basket is unobstructed, and the basket may be used in the ordinary manner to deliver one large order.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is A basket for the purpose described including a perforated bottom, side and end walls formed integral with the bottom, said side and end walls being flared upwardly and outwardly, said side and end walls being overlapped and secured together at their end frictionally engaging the bottom of said portions, beading formed at the upper edges basket. v P 10 of the side andend walls, a reinforcing rod In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my arranged within the beading, a shaft pivsignature in the presence of two witnesses.
