Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. '7, 1915.
Application filed July 20, 1914. Serial No. 852,129.
' To all whom it may concern:
' principal object of novel type of cooperating magazine wheretime passing from the tit proved toy gun are by the ammunition may be readily and uniformly fed to' the barrel.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention contemplates a toy air gun of the magazine type that is simple and effective in operation; that can be produced at a low cost, and in which the magazine and blow tube or barrel cooperate to provide means whereby an ample supply of ammunition may be retained in position to be fed to the blow tube, means being provided to prevent more than one shot at the magazine to the said tube.
Simple and practical examples of the imshown in the accompany ing drawings, wherein Figurel is a perspective view of the improved gun. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinalsectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the magazine in position to deliver a shot to the blow tube. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the magazine shown in the foregoing figures. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary bottom plan View of the gun, showing the magazine guide. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the top or coverfor the magazine. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view, and Fig. 8 is a section thereof, of a modified magazine and guide. Fig. 9 is a vertical sectional view and Fig. 10 a horizontal sectional view, of a further modification of the invention. Fig. 11 is a view in side elevation of another form of magazine.
The improved toy gun may be used in connection with any kind of ammunition, although the same is more particularly designed for use with harmless ammunition such as peas, beans, and-the like.
The invention comprises in its general organization, a blow tube or barrel 1 having an opening 2 for the admission of ammunition formed through it at a point intermediate one end, and opposite such opening 2, the tube is provided with an out standing, longitudinally extending track or guide 3 the endsof which areprovided with right-angularly. extending portions forming end abutments 4. A mouth piece 5 is provided for the end of the tube 1 adjacent the track 3, the mouth piece having an enlarged cored-out, or otherwise formed seat 6 for the tube, such seat being in communication with a longitudinally extending air passage 7 which is of smaller diameter than the seat and tube so that ammunition within the tube will not escape through said mouth piece.
A sleeve 8 slidably embraces the tube 1 and is of split formation so that its free longitudinal edges 9 will slidably engage the longitudinal ing limited by contact with the end abutments 4. The sleeve 8 is provided with an opening 10 adapted to be registered with the opening in tube 1 topermit ammunition to gravitate through the two openings and enter the tube 1, as will appear.
magazine 12 is mounted on the sleeve 8 directly overv the opening in said sleeve. The magazine 12 is in the form of a hopper and has reinforcing ba'seflanges 13 which overlap the sleeve 8. The magazine preferably has a reinforced rolled upper edge for the reception of a cover 14 the flange of Which is broken at regular intervals to provide oppositely disposed spring clasps 15 that engage over the upper edge of the hopper and thereby normally retain the cover in position to seal the hopper. Preferably the clasps 15 have their free ends outturned to form finger grips which facilitate removal of the cover.
A variation of the invention is suggested in Figs. 7 and 8 wherein ,the tube 1 is provided with a track 16 on its upper surface having outstanding end abutments 17. In this form of the invention the base flange 18 edges of the track or guide, 3, the slidable movements of the sleeve 8 beof the magazine is fast on the tube 2 and stirrer to prevent the ammunition clogging the outlet of said magazine.
In Figs. 9 and 10 the magazine 12 is shown equipped with. transversely inclined, internal deflecting plates or baffles 21 arranged in overlapping relation, to cause one shot at a time to be delivered to the outlet of the magazine. To facilitate the delivery of the shot, the free ends of the baffles 21 are notched, as indicated at 22 so that ample clearance is provided between said notched ends and the wall of the magazine for the passage of the shot.
The parts of the improved gun, with the exception of the mouth-piece 5, are preferablyformed of sheet material, such as tin or other metal, or paper. lhe mouth piece 5 is preferably formed of Wood or other material that will not damage themouth 'of the user.
In all forms of the invention, it will be seen that by sliding either the magazine or the slide v16 longitudinally of the' tube in one direction, ammunition will be delivered to the said tube, and by an opposite movement of said magazine, the supply of ammunition is cut-oil.
lVhat I claim as my invention is 1. A toy blow gun comprising a blow tube provided with ammunition admitting means,
a guide track carried by the tube and provided with end abutments, and a. magazine for delivering ammunition to the said admitting means and provided with means for slidably embracing the tube between said abutments and for slidably engaging the longitudinal edges of said track.
overlapping relation and each provided with means for causing the shot to be delivered one at a time to the tube inlet, and means for limiting the slidable movements of the magazine.
3. A blow gun comprising a blow tube provided with an ammunition inlet, a guide track carried by the tube and provided with end abutments, a split sleeve slidably mounted on the tube and having its longitudinal edges engaging the longitudinal edges of the track, a magazine mounted on the sleeve and having reinforcing base flanges that overlap said sleeve, and a cover for said magazine.
4. A blow gun comprising a tube provided with an ammunition inlet, a magazine slidably mounted on the barrel and provided with an ammunition outlet adapted to be alined with the inlet of the tube, and downwardly inclined baffles arranged within the magazine. adjacent the outlet thereof and having their free ends provided with notches to facilitate the discharge of arm munition.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
WILLIAM J. SPROULL.
